2007 FE650 Build

I'll try to get those answers for you when I get a chance. Have patience though, because it will take me a while to find the time. I'm currently building a run of turbo manifolds for some guys on another forum. :)

Well, a lot has happened since I posted last. We moved back up to Portland and I found a good group of guys to ride with up here.

The Husaberg has been running great. We put in 55 miles of tight, slick woods a couple weeks ago. The other two guys were on a KTM 200 and a KTM 300. There were times where the 2-strokes struggled up some slick hills and the Berg just tractored along at really low rpm happy as can be. I think some of that is these tires. They're cheap Full Bore USA M-37s, but the compound seems abnormally soft. I'm paying for it as the knobs are starting to chunk off, but dang they hook up well. For $50 a piece, I think I'll just continue to feed them to the 'berg.

I installed a P25 rear spring and have been pretty happy with it. Started off with 100mm race sag, but have been gradually increasing that. I'm at 105mm now and it's starting to feel pretty balanced.

We're heading to Bend this coming weekend for a three day ride. In anticipation of the great wide-open, I made a small modification to the exhaust. The "snorkel" that came out was 4" (100mm) long and the same diameter as the headpipes. Hoping it will pick up a little power on top without it.

A couple more notes about the modified endcap:

I cut out the snorkel with a dremel and initially left about 1/4" (6mm) of it attached to the endcap. Started it this way and revved it up, but it didn't sound that great. The sound was maybe a little "harsh" or "metallic" or "square" (if any of that makes sense). Took the endcap back off and removed the last bit of pipe. I also opened it up just a bit and radiused the inside of the opening. It now sounds more "full" or "round" or, you know, better.

I'm hoping to feel some difference in power after this modification. It has always had great power, but the top end felt a bit choked. I ported the head a little during the rebuild, but that didn't change the choked feeling up top at all. I think the exhaust must be the culprit.

tidying up the inside of the headers and the 2 into 1 bit of the mid section is also worth doing

Cool. Thanks for that info. I did smooth the primary inlets when everything was apart. I didn't think about the merge though. Might have to look into that.

Does jetting usually need to be modified after opening up the exhaust? If so, what's the usual change? Step up a main jet size perhaps? Or is it like adding displacement where the carb needs to be jetted leaner due to increased vacuum?

Only know about the DR-Z I have, but there the rule of thumb is a bigger main jet. In Mikuni jets a size difference about 155 to 160 or so, going from a very restrictive OEM exhaust and small-diameter header to the common dirtbike aftermarket exhaust styles. No idea if it applies here ... ;)
