2007 FE550e Ignition Timing questions

I have read/searched the service and owners manuals, and the owners doc, but I have not found any information regarding checking the ignition timing. There is no window in the stator cover through which to check the timing, and the generator coil is mounted in the cover.

Sooooooo, how do you check/set the ignition timing on a 2007 FE550e?

If neither static not dynamic ignition timing require checking/setting, what schema is used for spark advance management? With respect to maintenance of this system, are there any componentry that require periodic inspection or functionality checks?

Thanks.

you have a black box up under the seat. it is different for each cc of engine. check the part neumber enscribed on it against the book OK?

there were some pick up faults you might want to look into. there are resistance values in the workshp manual.

Here's a link that might help you. It does cover 450, 550, and 650. The years differ, but might give you a general idea of what's going on. Sorry, no Clymer manuals for these.

Curious though, did you change the stator or something? The ignition timing usually doesn't need to be adjusted unless it's been removed.

I do have that workshop manual, and as I stated in my original post: "I have read/searched the service and owners manuals, and the owners doc, but I have not found any information regarding checking the ignition timing."

I have not replaced, or changed, or messed with any ignition components. The bike starts and runs. I simply want to check the ignition timing, and cannot find any information regarding how to do so.

True, there is a black box under the seat. Why would I want to find the number inscribed upon it? Why would I want to look into pick up faults? Or check resistance values? How would doing those things teach me the ignition timing procedure?

It has been a while since I had my 07 550 or played with the ignition on my earlier bergs but to my memory there really isn't any adjustment to be done. The pick up within the stator assembly is pretty much a trigger and the ignition curve is controlled by the little black box under the seat. If it is running fine then it is obviously ok. I'm sure somebody on here with more knowledge will correct me if i have it wrong!

Gday Wescat

ive never checked mine, you would need to make a hole in the cover and put some marks on the bits

there is a signal strip on the OD of the flywheel that talks to the pulse coil

the start of the strip passing the pulse coil sets the limit for max advance and the trailing edge sets the starting advance

the length of the strip is used to calculate the engine speed so you can't change its length unless you have an aftermarket ignition where you can input the strip duration in degrees.

so to alter the timing you can move the strip or the pulse coil.

unplugging the TPS eliminates advance under load .. some people disconnect it to reduce the possibility of preignition.

sorry i can't be of more help, i had the opportunity to map out the ign curve when I made an ignition cover but i wanted to ride more at that point and after initial start up there was no real incentive.

Hi
On post 2003 bikes (kokusan ignitions) you can't tune them or even check, except if you make some marks and a hole on the cover, as bushie explained.
Obviously there is always a way do do everything, but in this case it's not suppose to.
Cheers

unless you have removed the clutch basket which meshes with the primary drive and balancer, removed the camshaft, or forgotten to use the woodruffe key on the flywheel nothing can change if it was set right to start with.
If they pop when de accellerating its jetting or pulsar coil , if they stop with no spark its a stator but rarely
