2003 vs 2004 FE650 Reliability

KTM type rockers and roller bearings

I was looking at the parts manuals last night and the 2003 has different part numbers for the rocker and bearings to the previous models (mostly 1989 - 2002) and the 2004 has a completely different numbering system (as stated by dsducati). So I wonder if anybody knows if the 2003 has the same KTM type rockers and roller bearings as the 2004, or if it has different parts to any other year.

There is a problem though. I've been told that here in Australia we never saw the 2002 model, only 2001 models with 2002 graphics. So did they do the same with the 2003 model. How can you tell if it's a 2002 with 2003 graphics?

Greetings Hribman Yes I've been reading other things on the Forums. The virus is contagious. I also like your gallery.

Greetings Mikst I have looked at http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/ubbthreads.php and have found something interesting. All about "Real bad valve timing" Vey entertaining!

Genuine '03 motors have two oil drain plugs - one holds the coarse mesh filter and the other has the magnetic drain plug.

'02 motors only have the plug that holds the mesh filter.

They are next to each other on the bottom RHS of the engine.

There may be other ways of checking as well.

The 2003 rockers are different from any other year, but they retrofit the older bikes like the 01/02's. In 2004 the Berg's got a redesigned head that uses the same parts and part numbers as the RFS KTM's.

ciao ancora,
what I found out today was that the bike was 2002, used 1700kms, from which the last part has been with "depotenziated" = reduced mechanically the power (hp) of the bike, to get one first timer to take a riding test....
Very normal here in Italy to offer this as an option, so anyone can buy a bigger bike, with less power, and later "open" it up for higher power when the license is updated...

Anyway, the bike seem like it has not been used lately. Before though it has been set for the road, the previous owner has made holes to plastic protection plates for cooler, maybe seeking to cool it better.... made the front fender like an arrow....and also laid it down to crack the clutch and decompressor handles....
It is 2002 due to the stamps on everything and also there is only the one hole to take the oil out. 2002 does not have the magnetic oil plug ?

Anyway, no test ride yet, later.

All help appreciated.

FinMoto,

Post a request in the 'Gallery Site' forum asking Jason to create a gallery for you.

I brought a 2003 FE650 new (got it in the box and assembled it myself) - it definately had the 2002 engine (2 drain plugs is the dead give away), also top triple clamp/bar mounts, had analog speedo (was updated to digital later).

Graphics & seat were 03 thogh - I believe all Australian deliveries were the same. I expected that this was going to be the first assembled in Austria, they were in fact the last of the Swedish (hence the cobbled together nature).

I got rid of it for an 04 FE550 - much better bike and exactly as per the parts manual - made in Austria.

Hi..

I've a 03 650 FSe, with 38hrs, no problems what so ever, dont regret selling my 570 Hu*^y one bit...Should have brought a Berg from the start and saved ££££££'s on repair bills....
