2003 fe501e is leaking gas from above the spark plug

I recently purchased my first MC since 1985; a 2003 fe501e and it runs great, and is a blast. I took it out yesterday for the first time, and rode with some friends. In the Las Vegas Desert. I was told my compression release seal may be leaking a bit, gas is leaking from above the spark plug and it comes down on both sides of the spark plug area on the head/cylinder and dirt starts collecting around the area, any ideas on an easy fix?

Very interesting!!!
I have an 03 501 in my garage that just started having the same issue. Fuel actually runs out of the drain hole in the head (the drain hole in the spark plug well for draining off water etc..). I have not yet investigated it, but assumed it was from a loose spark plug and possibly sticking carb float. Presently the bike will not start and fuel fouls the plug immediately. Fuel literally drips off the plug.
Let me know what you find as I am way too lazy to be bothered with it at this time

Thanks ned37, I will have to call the local dealer and see if they can order the flagstaff coils :)

Not to worry berger, ned37 has solved the mystery, using the gift of suspicion, and high tech analytical computers !!

I hope your´re not collecting fuel in the combustion chamber! It will clean the cylinder walls free from oil and cause shear damages. If the carb is leaking a longer period, gas will enter the crank case, ruining lubrication and possibly yourself.

Trust me on this!

Thanks Dr_C, Do you think I should rebuild the carb, just to be safe?

I think you should go through your carb and give it a good cleaning and going through. Also drain the oil, smell of the oil to see if there is the smell of gas. With the tank off and once you have gone through the carb hook up a fuel line to your carb and see if that cured it from leaks. Would be a good idea to wipe out the rubber boots, both intake side and air filter side. That should do the trick. Post what you find out.

Wild Bill, Thanks for the advice, I'll do that

Check the needle valve for dirt and see to that it can move freely and that it is adjusted to a reasonable bowl level. Even if it would be damaged and need replacing, that´s small money in comparison. Ensuring that the needle valve is tight will reduce your "sentence" if you forget to shut off the fuel valve.

Good luck!

Thanks, Dr_C I will do that, I am going to service the bike this week. I was told the clutch uses mineral oil, and that baby oil works fine. I am going to flush the radiator and refull with Engine Ice, and would you recommend using dot4 synthetic brake fluid, when I bleed and change the brake fluid? I purchased some Motul 300v oil, and then found a test comparison showing Amsoil 10-40 MC oil even beat Motul in all the test categories. :)
