2000 fe600 vs 2002 fc470

I've been doing a bunch of research on these two bikes and am curious as to what you guys think of these bikes for desert riding with tight rock sections as much as full throttle dirt roads...
Will the 470 handle that kind of use? Are parts going to kill me vs the 600? I'm riding a crf450r right now and hate it off road, most of my time is spent working the clutch, would it be the same with a strung out 470?
I like the idea of the 470 bc it does not have electric start and it looks like I can get a 4 gallon tank for it, I've read the 600 will shred tires in the hills pretty quick! I'm 6 foot 200 pounds and get to be pretty agressive offroad, I keep both wheels mostly on the ground, but do like to do the occasional 25 foot double.
What say you? Do neither of theses bikes fit my purpose?

Thanks,
Trevor

Sounds like you need to put a Rekluse in the CRF.

its not my bike, a friend of my wife owns too many toys and does not have enough time!
I have a defender bc it's interesting in many aspects, the husaberg reminds me of it!

so you have no other input? i'm leaning towards the 470 even though i know its a bad idea, i can't help myself

The 600 would make a good dualsport bike. The 470 is more similar to the CRF.
In my opinion , pre 04 husabergs are project bikes. Project's meaning they take and require alot of TLC. Having patience and a good mechanical apptitude is a must. It also helps to own another bike if you like to ride.
My suggestion is to read through "the owners doc" so as to make an informed decission.
Here is the link.

I read through the owners doc thing it was the most helpful thing i read so far, it's very hard to search this site i guess bc the stuff people put in their signatures shows up in the search results...
the 470 in question has alot of upgrades, was ridden for about two years and has not had much love since then, the owner says it won't idle and the carb needs a good cleaning... I'm a computer engineer, i work with two dozen electrical and mechanical engineers, so getting to the bottom of some issues isn't too hard...
I'm worried that i'll spend tons of money on parts, which from the depths of the internet seems to be true...
the 600 has dead estart, i won't be doing the dual sport thing with this bike

Post 2000 are project bikes until 2004 and even then you have to manage the maintenance really well. ...I have the feeling that I already have posted in this thread, was it removed?,...

Thread started 14 hours ago. Did you post to it recently?

ahm the 600 doesn't have to shred tyres, it could of course if required but it doesn't have to.

i weigh 158lbs. personally I feel that a 650 has only just enough engine capacity to proviode nice smooth useable power and tourque over a wide rev range without needing a new piston every 30 hrs.

the idea of CC class limits being passed on from top level competition right down to the masses is rediculous for general trail riders

how was it said? "homologated intake restrictors" for the top level competition class limits would result in a cheaper more reliable and freindly power output alternative in engines for the general dirtbiking population.

my advice at 200lbs is ... go big

Even on the tight twisty stuff? Would it be fair to say parts are relatively easier to come by for the 600?

Even on the tight twisty stuff?

especially the tight twisty stuff

the obstacles of handling and higher COG aside I love the smoother off idle power delivery and longer life of the bigger engines. oodles of uncomplaining tourque make it easy (for me) to keep up a good flow of momentum without breaking rythm. on a 450f in sand one mistake, drop a bit of speed and youve just stuffed a corner or two. the big berg just grunts back up to speed. the 450 will do it but with more clutch work and or more arm wrenching acceleration from the peaky(er) lil engine.

Smorgy there is a class racing of formula cars here with homologated intake restrictors, given their location on the engine they simple, cheap and easy to check or control. unlike CC limits which i know are often violated. its not practical for example to test the CC of every engine in a state mx round, I have seen 60 and 80cc barrels on 50s.

the cams would be interesting :D

sorry tkavan01 im not much help ... "go big" is all ive got.

I doubt there would be much, if any, difference in parts costs between the 2.
The 2000 model was a major model change from the early girls and was essentially the same, except for a few engine upgrades and stuff like that till 03.
04 saw the next big change but was basically only engine related with ignition, carb and left engine cover the biggies and this stayed the same all the way thru to 08.

The 2000 model 600 (new frame and old design motor)is a good dessert bike and will most likely be more depandble than the 02 470 unless the 470 has already been up-graded with the up grades most of them seemed to require.

Both of them have the same Dellorto carb, so both of them will be finicky, unless they are dialed in.

Parts cost will be about the same.

Well, the 2001 motor was quite a radical change, wasn't it?
That is what I thought, iwas under the impression the 2000 600 engine was the last of the evolution of a ton of minor changes over almost ten years and that it also shared a lot of parts with the 501 motor...
It seems like the 470 is very unique with very few parts to swap on from other bikes...

You are correct, the KTM motor up to 07-08 is essentially a mirror imaged pre 2001 Husa motor. Most people have had really good luck with the 98-00 engine. The 00 with better frame is a really good bike. I have experince from the 501, but I think there are plenty of people here that have had good luck with the 600 as well.

So are any of the ktm parts usable in 2000 600?
Man I thought this would be easier!

are there any larger tanks available for a 2000 or older bike? seems the only tank available is for 2001 >

A huge five gallon tank was available from Husaberg for the 1999 and below models. They are getting quite hard to find. I have been looking for a long time and finally found a used one last week for $150.00 and a six hour round trip drive.
