1997 FE 400 Jetting Question

Hello
Need some advice here

So I got a 1997 FE 400 E with the stock VHSB Flatside Carb

It starts OK runs Good in upper throlttle pull hard , but with small throttle opening , like just above idle it's rough , hesitades and stumbles , once past this it' rev hard and fast

I've cleaned the carb and set the float hight (slightly off) everything seams to be good

I messed with the mix screw and i got it to go better but not eleminated completly

I'm thinking needle setting is wrong , too rich ?

The Jetting seams stock as per the 1997 part list , :
Mainjet : 185
Throttle : 55
NeedleJet : FN 260
StartJEt : 50

Now the needle it has is a K3 but the parts list says K32 or K35
It was on the the 4'th notch from top.

What is the stock position ?

I could just try one notch at a time but would like to know some starting point and any other opinion

Tanks

Hello Nuno

I would suggest that the needle isn't the reason.

classic needle too rich is:
even throttle = a giant is behind the bike pulling/pushing/pulling/pushing.

he goes away when you open the throttle.

the most important jet in the carb is the PJ. what is yours?

I started to unwind the pilot screw 1/4 at a time got better at 3 and 1/4 turns out

the 33 is way too small at a guess. I would have thought a 38 would show a clear improvement. I can't be certain because you may have blocked and worn areas of the carb.

I will check again this weekend and try different needle and pilot screw setting to try to get to some conclusion
Thank you taffy

Hi

The 97 manual says 2-3 turns out, for the flatslide carb. The 33 pilot it's the std.

If you need one of this carbs, I've got one cheap, just don't remembre the jets that it's got, but can check.

3 turns out on the FS means the PJ is too small. thanks for the confirmation.

OK
Just did a bit of testing

I moved the clip on the needle to the top most slot, dropping the needle (leanest position),and the problem has compleatly dissapeared

Taffy, what you said made perfect sense it should have been pilot but maybe i was thinking worng and it realy was at a higher rpm than i described earlier, hard to tell as there's no tach

I set the pilot screw to get the highest idle and it seams to be at it's best between 2 and 3/4 to 3 turns out

So i might still go up a bit on the pilot (maybe 35 or 38 ??)

I do have a series of small pop's on rapid decel , but the muffler has some air leak where it mates to the pipes , i will try to fix that first then try again
it did it before , but now they seam smaller and more of them ??

I also notice a slight hangging of the idle when returning from high revs -very small, just hangs a bit above idle for a split second then goes down, don't realy know if it was there before , maybe i'm just nit-pick-ing

Thanks again for the help
