The 09 water pump seals came installed backwards. The spring always goes towards the liquid you are trying to seal against. Even the shop manual shows incorrect installation.

My originals lasted in excess of 100 hours. Sadly I put them in according to the book, and the weep hole started to dribble fluid. I had thought it strange that the in the book it said to put the wp seal in with the spring away from the coolant.

I put another wp seal in with the spring towards the coolant and no more leaks.

Be careful when removing the water pump impeller. It is a two piece design and the outer wheel comes off easily, the inner "disc" as they call it is rather fragile and will not want to slide off of the shaft. If you try and force it, it will break.

If you run into this problem, use a cotton rag at firs to see if you can remove the oxidation from the shaft that is keeping the disc from coming off. If that doesn't work, you may have to use some fine steel wool to clean the shaft.

Experience is a great teacher.............. I have broken two. They are cheap but a pain. The design of the impeller is great as it is a closed impeller and is less prone to cavitation and much more efficient than an open design.

A question for those who've been before me. I am replacing my shaft seals on my 2010 FE450 due to leaky weep hole. I have done the weep hole mod, but must have had dirt intrusion prior to doing the mod. I've read here and have heard from Husaberg Technical that the seals go spring toward fluid on both sides....that makes sense. The parts catalogue that my shop was using shows the 5.5 mm shaft seal with the spacing nubs outboard, facing the water pump. My bike came with the smooth seal outboard. Does it really matter which seal goes where? If so....what is the correct orientation?
Thanks in advance!

I agree with what he says 100% There are 2 different seals though and the parts book has the nubbed-spaced seal installed on the pump side and the thinner smooth seal on the oil side. My bike has the seals installed the other way around AND with the springs facing the wrong way. Does it matter which seal goes where?
Thanks,
Derik
