Hi everyone, I had the waterp pump seals and bearing replaced by the dealer when they did the warranty cam. Now after 4 hours it leaks again, when I say leak it was more of an eruption. I was out by myself hitting a spot near town, when I turned back on to the highway I short shifted into 6th and sat on about 120 k/hr when I noticed the all too familiar smell of hot coolant. I got home and added 200ml of coolant went for a short ride after sitting stationary to get it hot it didn't leak at all. I dont understand it, the river run we did the other had the bike boiling over once and the two sealed sections of road equalled about 40km which were travelled at 110 - 120 k/hr ?

Went for another 15 minute lash on the bitumen and lost no coolant. Why would it happen like that? I know the radiator cap works there was steam coming from it last ride. The last time it went there was an inital explosion of coolant and then weeping and gushing out proper when hard on it. Starting to worry it's a head gasket ( nooooooooo) Any ideas would be appreciated

I've seen this on other bikes. Highway cruising at higher rpm. Cylinder pressures are higher and lifted a head enough for the water jacket to get pressurized. Problem was improper cylinder head torque caused by no washers under the cylinder head nuts. The nuts would score into the aluminum head and give a faulse torque reading. I doubt it is your problem but you might want to get a torque wrench on the head and see.

Your thread says water pump seal, but, it is un clear to me where the coolant was coming from?

Was it coming out the weep hole?

You know, radiator caps do go bad sometimes. Do you have the fan on your bike?

Hi DaleEO, yes it is the water pump weep hole and no I dont have the fan, overheating has never really been an issue as there is no tight technical 1st gear only riding around here. I will check the bolt tensions tonight as well. Well
I guess its shed time. :D

So as far as checking the head bolts 3 out of 4 were ok the one that wasn't "snapped" when torque was applied. I removed all 4 one by one, surprise surprise they were all dry no lube at all. So I lubed the threads, heads and washers with engine oil and retensioned. While I had the radiators off I checked the thermostat in a pot of water on the stove and it opened before the pot boiled.
When stripping the tank I noticed the head gasket on the top side had a faint trace of oil along it. While the tank was off I took the opportunioty to unbutton the injector and test it. I stripped the injector from the throttle body reconnected the fuel and power with the tank on the bike, tapped the start button to cycle the pump and sure enough a drop formed at the tip about 20 seconds later. Looked at the "in" side of the injector and its was packed with crud. So there is the hard starting when hot.......
Reassembled everything refilled with a litre of motorex antifrezee, supposedly providing antifreze protection to -40, not exactly what I need, and run it didnt get any tiny bubbles in the coolant.
No time left now so will run it tomorrow and see what I get.

Cheers bushie copper is also more affordable than OEM  I'll go for a rort tomorrow just ot be sure. More shed time

righto have done another 60 km on bitumen only, got it nice and hot just poking around backstreets and then out into some open road for a good caining and lo and behold no more gushing/weeping from the weep hole. Hooray 8) I know it wont last, will be ordering a head gasket monday. I'm thinking I'll re ring it while I've got the lid off, cant hurt.

i had water coming out of the weep hole and thought it was the seal, worked out to be the impeller had broken and the nut that holds it had come off its thread, because the water was not citculating it became very hot hence weep hole, new impeller and locktight the nut in place and all was fine.

I will def. look into that 993sdad, I have just discovered my head gasket is f&*^ed, so will add it to the list

G'day Berglesmerg,

I just fixed my weepy tell-tale problem.
I own a 09; berg 570 and have put 11200klm or 220+hrs on it since March last year.
Since new it has leaked coolant from the tell-tale, and not the radiator overflow.
I have replaced the water and oil pump seals several times and checked the impellar shaft for trueness and imperfections. It still leaked.
I have now had a look at the top end and replaced the piston, rings and gaskets, the oil and water pump seals impellar and shaft. No more leaks.

The interesting thing is, I got a factory work shop manual CD off the dealership I bought my OEM parts from, and the diagram showing the position of the water pump seals are reversed from what my manual shows that I got with the bike. There is a direct contradiction in the way the parts are shown to be installed. I consulted many ppl about this and I am certain I have my seals, now, positioned correctly. This is in reverse to how my bike came from the dealership floor. One of the seals has a metal lip, this goes on the oil side, not the water side, as water and metal don't play well together. Low n behold after doing this, my berg doesn't leak like an old dog with a bladder problem :D

I hope this info helps you.

By the way warranty should cover me, but it doesn't, and i feel like killing any one who says that Bergs come with "warranty". What a joke! They should call it sucker warranty.

gday berg570,
I think I have cured the weep with a new copper head gasket, I only had an intermittent leak, I retensioned the head bolts and it ran fine for another 4 hours before starting its **** again. I'll find out for sure next week. It is interseting though that your seas were in backwards, there are some QAQC issues starting to surface with the LDC bikes.

Man you definitey didnt buy that bike to look at it ! Thanks for the tip.

damn straight, the big berg gets around. in a big hurry. ha ha.

what does QAQC and LDC stand for?

I think QAQC is Quality Assurance Quality Control.

LDC is a term I first seen Taffy use in a post. He never answered the question as to what it stood for, but someone guessed Laid Down Cylinder. Think Bushie the Bundy Drinker guessed it from memory.

I thought you typed 220 hours as a mistake. I got mine in Feb 2010 and it only has 25, I need to get out more :D

my 09 450 has just started to leak out the weap hole, what do you suggest?
putting in a waterpump kit or head gasket?

stupid dealer told me i had a pin hole in a hose and replaced that

Check that your head gasket is still good, then your radiator cap. A bit of cause and effect. I had both at the same time. Look for bubble is the coolant at the filler neck when its at operating temp, also an oil y residue in the rads is a good sign as well.

installed my new pump seals and all working fine now, put the water side seal with the spring facing the coolant rather than the weep hole like standard

I just figured out why my water pump seal still leaks, it seem that when I replaced the head gasket I have pinched the radiator overflow hose between the tank and wiring loom, the water pump weep hole is then the path of least resistance. I feel like a clown.

did 520 ks trail ride cobar to mont hope and return 5 bergs 2 with problems one preasurised radiator possible head gasket mine had the copper gaskett in but had weephole problems checked the seals the coolent side one installed backwards i also fitted a coper pipe and hose out of the weephole to stop mud and dust getting in i have changed out the 7amh battery with the SHORAI 14 amh 208 dollars from the usa great machine but for the head gasket and the weephole
