'06 FE 450 jetting question

Hi, I have been reading this forum since quite a while, but never posted. So here it goes:
I live in Virginia at 500 meters elevation, bike is a '06 FE 450 with rekluse auto clutch. I race hare scrambles on the east coast (tight woods).
Carb: 45 PJ, 175 main, OBDVT 2nd. With this setup the bike starts incredible fast with the button (very important, since we have dead engine starts with 50 guy's on the line) is great in tight, 2nd or 3rd gear stuff, but lacks a little power in wide open full throttle stuff.

Last summer I bought the lineweaver kit and the bike made great power in mid to full throttle, but won't idle well and stalls in slow technical sections. Also will take much longer to start (several ticks of the engine). Dale worked many hours with me (Thanks Dale) but we couldnt get the bottom cleaned up.

Bought OBDVR needle 5th, 160 main, 40 PJ. Bike runns ok, but not nearly as powerful as Dale's setup, starts well, but does not quite start as fast a with the DVT needle.

My goal is to get the starting/low speed performance of my stock setup and the mid/full throttle performance of Dales kit. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Roland

RE:

then you need an E series needle. it's in the doc my freind! i suggest an EKQ which you can get from Sudco. OBEKQ is the code. a yamaha needle. see it in the doc. OCEMR is similar from sudco but advise the yam needle as it's plated.

dale who? helped you?

regards

Taffy

Did you have the adjustable air bleed with Dales kit? If not, I would see about getting one from Dale. If you did have the air bleed and had it properly adjusted I have no suggestions. I was able to get my idle and off throttle perfect using the adjustable air bleed with Dales kit. No problems ever in tight technical or rocky sections. (06 496 w/ rekluse and Akro 1500ft elevation)

Berger, I had the adjustable air bleed with Dale's kit, and went down as far as a 35 PJ (lowest dealer stocked) and tried from 0 to 2 turns out and still had problems with the idle. With his needle, AP unhooked I need to screw in the idle speed adjuster all the way, to get idle which raises the slide close to 5 mm and therefore we don't seem to run of the pilot circuit anymore.

you have the throttle slide in the wrong way up you silly arse!

please note i said EKQ from sudco. incorrect. EKQ is from yamaha. part # in the doc.

dales needle makes idle very, very rich unfortunately. if you're lucky you drop the needle like me to clip 1 and run a 145MJ and a 35PJ.

i had him make me a special needle just for me. the changes are undisclosed but you can i trust add 2 + 2!

Try Buzzards "$40 spruce-up". Do a search, works great. I have the same bike, '06 450, rekluse, plus no battery or starter. Thanks Buzzard and Kadlec!!!

Taffy, already ordered the EKQ from Yamaha. We tried Dales needle with 35PJ and adjustable air bleed out 2 full turns, but not down to clip one. Thanks
jzfe, what altitude are you and what is your setup? Thanks

skibum

i don't think you meant the PAS out two full turns?

you must have meant the PS under the careb?

all I can add is I had much the same experiece on my 06 Fe450e in trying to get Dale's system to work down low. I did notice a brigther feeling - mo power from mid to high power but my bike never started well. so I went back to the AP rod and the dealers stock needle and jets settings whch were slighly richer then factory pj. Yeah I missed that brightness of dales system but heck I don't race it, I just ride it and dont care to tinker.

all I can say is yes with dales needle/jets and his first settings (after I dropped the clip 2 places to get it to run at all), I noticed the issues down low - running rough and hard to start which is wierd because these bikes start so easy. Once I got back to stock jetting (dealers set up) My berg was first kick starting again like a dream, ran great low, mid and high, but had less snap through the whole range. Good hunting for the right mix!

I live at 8000 ft. Running a 40 pilot jet 162 mj, factory pro emulsion(sp?) tube, honda acc pump diaphram and the honda needle. I will post the actual needle # when I get home. But it is just like Buzzard recommended in his thread, parts bought from Kadlec. Like I said, just a kick start model now, and it seems to be just as easy, no stalling. :D

Taffy, no mistake, PAS. We started at just cracking it to 2 turns out, it kept idling better, the farther out we went. Quite strange.

A NVCR needle position four. I went to a 42pj today. Totally rips. The total character of my berg has changed, more like a modern JAP DOHC 450. While I have not had a chance to trail ride it(due to a huge winter snowfall). It is way better on dirt roads, fuel screw no more than 2 turns out. WOOOHOOO!!!
