Cheers for that Jeff!

Have made mind up, will look for 450 instead of 501 as suspect it will fall over better due to lower gyros, and be a bit more fun round typical UK MX track (give me a chance to keep up with my riding buddy on CRF450!).

Other mate bought a 450 off ebay here, one of the Force specials, but he might sell it due to injury, so I may get first shout. I suspect I will miss the stokers but need to learn riding style for thumpers anyway, so what better way than on a Berg FE450!!

TJT

if the cylinder deck height is higher the cam timing 'rocks' and changes!

pray tell if you know better!

Taffy,I don't want to rob this thread.
but if you are getting rocking that bad
you need to fab.an extra idler sprocket.

On the 450 vs 501,if it has the new carb
and ignition you might like it better than the
450. They could use a little more lowend.

i think you're talking humbug TJT. i have already explained that the difference between the two cams is just 2.5 degrees at the camshaft. it's 1mm-maybe 2mm at the bot holes. i've run the cam 5 degrees out and lost about 6BHP so please-if you don't think it makes a difference-explain....

i await....

Taffy,I PMd you.

The FE suspension is a little soft on a MX track.
The FX was pretty close.I am not sure of the spring
specs. The CRF450r is designed for MX and hard to
beat,I would stick to picking on the CRF450X pigs.

Spaced up any stroker cyclinders lately Taffy?
It does not change cam location or timing.

go seek medical help at once-or stick to KTMtalk. they expect a higher standard of gibberish there.

you gotta be sharp to take me on and you don't cut it...

i re-timed the DOHC cams on my WR away from either YZ or WR timing and it was called "taff-timed" i was using variable timing camwheels from a company in clearwater called falicon crankshafts.

you change the height of the cylinder, you change the cam timing. i raced a ducati pantah for 13 years that had two SOHC cylinders and did all my own prepping and tuning. you change the deck height - you change the cam timing. it's simple.

got it.

good.

Taffy.Resorting to insults is not a suitable substitute
for reading some books on cam dynamics. But I
guess all the engineers should have consulted with
you first. If you increase the compression a timing
change can be mathematical calculated. But changing
the distance from crank centerline to deck hiegth
alone should not requir a diffent phasing of the cam.
If you are using the same length chain and only have
a tensioner on one side then you may have to move
the cam in its sprocket to get back to the same timing.
If this is what you meant then I misunderstood you,
and we have wasted much time because of the English/
American language variances.

i fail to see where there is a language difference TJT? you raise the top of the 'block' and then put it all back together and the cam has moved! it's very easy.

from you

If you increase the compression a timing
change can be mathematical(ly) calculated

there isn't a timing change when you increase the compression. the two are seperate. there is a (non-static) compression change when changing the timing though. but you got them the wrong way round fella!

from you

If you are using the same length chain and only have
a tensioner on one side then you may have to move
the cam in its sprocket to get back to the same timing.

oddly enough TJT that is what i have done but the factory have another more technical approach. they make two cams and call one the '53' and one called the '55'.

or are we both fluent bad sadly in two different languages!

Are these for the older motor? With the split
cylinder on the new motor that seems to me
it would be difficult.I am suprised they did
not just make an offset sprocket.
