cheers for that dale, unwittingly you have confirmed what i was telling everyone in the spring last year....... people soon forget. seems that unless it's said by god or mattighofen nothing is absorbed.

just for those that don't remember my mate got through two ignition units while the rad threw it's contents out. the units coughed too and dieded. :( :(

later production bikes were sorted.

now where was i-aah yes, knit one, pearl one.... :p :p :p

regards

Taffy

When the bike first overheated I asked about the ignition module. The answer was it was not in the vin range or had been corrected, I cant remember which it was.
I had my dealer call BMG today and they said they are unaware of any bulletin reguarding overheating, case modification ect.. They recommended bleeding the cooling system properly to see if that had any effect.
I have to admit I have never pulled the bleeder screw during filling. We will see how it goes after the rocker inspection. I usually pull the radiator to adjust the valves anyways.

Hi Berger,
In the early days of Husaberg Dirttrack we discovered coolant dead zones existed under the exhaust and intake ports. kenny and I created a field fix which included a steam vent on the exhaust side and two ambient air bleeds on the intake. The Exhaust modification was incorporated into production somewhere around 1998 though the intake side was never addressed. I do believe the "new" coolant vent to be the offspring of our field repair. :D

Do take advantage of the bleed port.

Sincerely,
Dale

Friends,
For what it may be worth:
I have contacted Husaberg Austria regarding potential cooling issues. I am certain they shall search their archive for possible bulletins, etc. I state such sincerely as I have a contact for whom we freely exchange non classified information.

I shall let you know the outcome.

Sincerely,
Dale

Thank you Dale.
I think I will take the main jet up to 180 while I have it apart. There is very little color on the plug

I just looked at all of the videos on that site, VERY COOL! I seen on KTM's 525, they have auxiliary electric cooling fans. They put on the back side of the radiator.
I’ve seen them on the Baja designs web site.

There are a few guys running the cooling fan out here. It is in the KTM Hard Part catalog. I was looking at them the other day. It looks like the Berg is a little to tight to mount that particular kit on. I was going to try one but the dealer did not stock it.

If the coolant is erupting out due to a localized hot spot a cooling fan may not be effective. Also the cooling fan would be running on DC power and would take from charging the battery. I would vote for a oversize radiator if a factory bulletin does not exist. It would be prudent to install a water temperature sensor before changing anything. I think Dale had tapped directly into the head but in-line aftermarket ones are out there.

I'm not ready to get too crazy yet. It still just may be a bleeding and jetting issue. What ever the problem is I am sure the solution will be simple and straight forward.
Being that I do not ride alot it generally takes me about a year to get a bike completely dialed in. I have 3 Bergs and use each for different types of riding. I would normally use the 470 for the tight single track I have been riding but it will be on the shelf until Moab.

Answer

Hello friends,
A heating bulletin regarding the modification of cooling passages does indeed exist. Said modification requires head removal, case / head drilling and gasket revisions. Said modification was field tested in select regions and proved to be more trouble than benefit. As I understand said revision is neither officially recommended nor endorsed by Husaberg Austria.

Sincerely,
Dale

Ps
As with our early dirttrack engine modification enhanced coolant flow via the above mentioned is with regard to the exhaust port area.

Ken, I looked at the KTM fan and there is not enough room behind the radiator. I went to Fry's Electronics and bought 2 computer cpu cooling fans that run on 12v dc. They will fit in front of the radiator if you are willing to trim the fins in front of the radiator. I'll give them to you if you are interested.

You want to ride Sycamore or Bartlett this weekend?

I went out for a group ride today and the bike boiled over briefly at the first stop, but then again so did 2 other bikes. I went back to the staging area after that (about 12 miles) with no incident. Although it was at higher speeds. The ambient temp was about 70-75 degrees.
This is after I bled the cooling system properly and upped the main jet to 180.
There where 4 Bergs out there including mine. None of the guy's are members on the site. I encouraged them to join. They said they overheat as well from time to time.

I may try the computer fans but I am afraid they wont hold up well to moisture. I still have to see how much coolant I actually lost today. I dont believe it was too much.
As far as riding next week I will have to see how I feel. I got to see my first javalina today up close and personal. He came out of the ordeal much better than I did (twisted knee and hip).

Hey Ken,

We were ice racing three new bergs on Weds and the 650 motor was really tight. It took 2 days for the engine to loosen. The bike was ridden hard for more than 6 hours each day. Your engine may still need more time to loosen.

Even in the low temps in Canada, the engine was very, very hot.

Solutions do exist and instead of this time giving said information to the manufacturer without compensation or even so much as a thank you I have opted to address said issues on my own. This is of course unless BMG would like to jump on board with me which would most certainly reduce end user expense and expedite the fix.

I asked Josh Barrett about this subject on Tuesday after our meeting and mentioned your above quote. He is not interested in 'jumping on board with you'. I though it would be better for you to know the truth, rather than be misled as was I.

Hi Splat,
My reference regarding BMG in the above was more in jest. I am an authorized BMG / Husaberg parts, service and warranty dealer. I also assist BMG regarding Husaberg issues of a technical nature. As a result I am in frequent contact with BMG. I rarely speak with Josh these days and I believe such to be by design. From previous conversations I am of the opinion that outside of the fact that his company imports and distributes a product for which I provide a service we have very little in common. I instead speak with the various BMG department managers regarding day to day Husaberg business.

Example:
Parts: Roy Thomas
Warranty / Technical : Bob Slipp
Sales: Brett Saunders

As you most likely have concluded outside that of BMG financing a project (and I already know the bottom line) Josh and I would likely have little to talk about.

Thank you for your concern. Unfortunately I have a fair idea of where I stand regarding such issues and was simply taking a benign poke. :)

Sincerely,
Dale

With all due respect if an engine new and / or otherwise is "tight" enough to promote overheating something is terribly wrong.

Regarding a new engine:
Quite honestly I only allow for a forty-five minute run in (often via the dynamometer) prior to pulling the trigger.

For what it may be worth:
Through thermal mapping and the use of a dynamometer I can honestly state the following:
"All else remaining equal a properly assembled and tuned engine will not run cooler and / or harder as time accumulates"

Sincerely,
Dale

Dale,
Thanks as always for your input. I hope you and BMG or Husaberg can come to an accord. It has been a long time coming.
When it comes to manufactures it seems they just dont want to hear it (corrections and improvements). That is why aftermarket supplyers thrive for the most part. Unfortunately for us the production numbers are just too small, but then that is part of the allure for the marque.

Hi Berger,
Josh Barrett cut his visit to the coast short and as a result I was unable to meet with him. According to Splat said meeting would have proven futile regarding heating issues, just the same I would truly liked to have met the man.

Sincerely,
Dale

Would a hotter or colder plug have much effect on the coolant temperature?

Hi Gentlemen
Without getting technical and i'm sure its of no use to Berger (Ken) unfortunately, but here in the UK it's commonplace for our ladies to overheat.
So we just stick the organic premixed coolant in, that boils at 150 degrees....and 'Voila'
