Ok, I'm getting somewhere ... I replaced the decompressor lever with the later pn as in the doc - then I added a new set of cables in paralell to the existing ones and took the starter motor to bits and cleaned it a bit. Fully charged the battery and changed the oil (10w 50) and filters. Coldish night last night and the bike was near impossible to turn over on the kicker. ?? it would sometimes turn over on the starter but only a few farts - no proper running. I tried the kicker again and with the choke on it would start and run but only for about a second. It would not even fire with the choke off. Maybe the pilot jet is too weak and/or the choke jet too rich ...??

Anyway - ended up jumping the bike from the car and again sometimes it turned over fast and sometimes very very slow - weird. It still wouldnt fire so I did something that never works - opened the throttle right up and hit the button - it nearly made me jump out of my skin when it fired up insatntly on full throttle!!!

After that I took it for a short run and was rewared with it re-starting instantly off the button each time after that - hey maybe I've cracked it!!??!!

Funny about the hard kicking though - maybe clogged with fuel mixture...?

i don't think you are over the worstof it yet...

the bike is lean for starting which is no bad thing so you need to get a fatter choke jet. whatever is in it - order another one up a size.

the fast slow turnover thing? better men on the electrics will tell you but i would simply say that was the earth (negative) connection on the jump battery.

regards

Taffy

Ok - Latest - Battery is fully charged now - not YT7s as they are Nz equiv of £95 over here and I'm skint! but cranking amps tested at 130 which is sames spec as...
Came across the kickstart decomp adj in the manual - it was way off - wow is this kickstart easy to use - its a pleasure - when its adjusted correctly!!
Yep - it started 3 rd kick after being stopped for 3 days - ran it for 1 minute and stopped it - started immediately on button! Couldn't belive it so tried again - button - start - Yes!!!

Told wife (who didnt beleive me ) so went to garage to demonstrate (held breath and pressed button) Yesssssss!!!!
Job Done I think!
(will also try choke jet (thanks taffy) upgrade becasue today is a very warm day ---- 23c)

Guys - Thanks all for the help - in summary :
get the latest decomp lever fitted - make sure you have a full battery of good specs and upgrade the cabling. This should sort it as far as cranking speed is concerned - then you just need jetting ..
