01 FC470 starts with choke, dies without.

This is my first post, so I am not sure if this is the right place. I just purchased an 01 Hus FC470 and I can start it with the choke on and when I go to turn the choke off, it dies immediately. The only thing I have done so far is clean the air filter and check the oil. I have not checked the valves yet because I am not familiar with how to do it yet. I let it Idle for about 1 minute with the choke on and I think it should be warm enough but it just dies. I have tried to gradually release the choke and it just goes from idling (a little high like normal when a choke is on) to dead engine. I don't know how it ran before, I bought it blind. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the pilot jet is plugged. If the bike has not been run for a long time the fuel left in the float bowl will dry up and leave a gummy residue clogging the jets. I would take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning.

............and after that i wouls start it again on choke, warm it as best you can then wind the tickover up just before you close the throttle. from there you set the fuel screw etc.

could be an old plug. need to get your tappets done as well.

regards

Taffy
