getting an 09' on the road?

Hey guys, been lurking the forums for a while now.

i would really love to get an 09 570 for next season.
i would also love to have it on the road.
basically my question is, is a dealer able to do the conversion cheaper than i can?
if i can do it cheaper, what exactly is needed? would it just be a proper headlight, DOT rims and tires and a bigger set of brakes? is that all that needs to be "converted"?
i would like to keep the stock rims with the knobbies on them (i'd have to get the proper rotor on them) that way i can have a SM on the street (more or less) and a true off roader with simply swapping rims.

tips and opinions?

Thank you very much guys! already have learned a ton from reading posts!

setting up the wheels and brakes will take a fair bit of financial commitment , i mean to do it properly .

are you saying that it would cost me more to do it than the dealer (assuming the parts we both would use are the same)?

i would source the parts needed very carefully , you will save money if you weigh up the options .

the dealer could do it cheaper ... but do you think he will be prepared to pass on the savings to you ?

sounds good!

is there any place in particular i should look at for wheelsets / rubber / brakes online? i wont be racing, just riding the street, if that matters.

Thanks for the help whosahberg!

the thing im wondering about wheel sets is are some DOT approved, and others not? i was assuming that the stock rims wouldnt be DOT approved. or is pretty well any wheel set you buy going to tbe DOT approved?

....? im not sure i get that, do you have another site i should be looking at?

Hey bro,

In Canada we don't need DOT rims. Frankly I don't know if anyone does. You will need DOT rubber, though. As for all the rest of the street-legal stuff(signals, horn, etc) we all will have to wait and see what the 09's are equiped with.

I converted a 07 FE550 to street legal, that was easy as KTM/Husaberg already have parts that plug into the exsisting bike. My supermoto set up includes an extra set of 18"/21" rims with road tires and a 45 tooth sprocket. Was a lot cheaper than 17"rims and full sm set-up.

Aaron.

Shorty, Check BOSS's gallery. He is setting up a FE 650 for some black-top duty. His way looks like it won't FRACTURE your wallet.

Also Dan @ MotoXotica has a set up that might be just what you are looking for:

i an ~6'2" and without riding gear weight about 185. would it be wise to change out the fork (or even just get new springs?) and rear shock (or even just a new coil?) or would it be fine if i adjust for the road and for the trails?

ahoolsema, by 18"/21" you mean front / rear? and the 45 tooth sprocket, does that make the gearing stock again with the changed wheel sizes? does that look lop sided at all? im thinking id just get some 17" front and back, however, if the setup you have doesn't look lopsided, and it still feels right as far as steering and everything goes, i will look into that. do you have any recommendation as far as wheelsets go? reading other SM forums there were "hooligan" threads, and it sounds so fun, i wanna jump stairs and agressive stuff like that, will almost any spoked wheel fit that bill?

as far as BOSS' build goes, that looks like what id need. i hope he sees this thread and chimes in. would love to have a parts list. i am, right now, trying to get a total cost for the bike and build to see what i have to give up in order to afford the bike :p

aftermarket headlights, they are universal mount eh?
also these universal tail lights, they are all straight foreward to attach eh? is it only a matter of choosing the one i like the looks of best (and is legal)?
keeping with the tail lights, is there a brake light circuit on bikes not equiped with lights? or would i have to rig up a system with my own switches?
signals i know i will have to find a hand control, not hard. also, flasher units uaually come with the tail lights eh? i like the looks of the Zeta hand guards with the flashers in them for front signals.

VIN's, are these going to be flagged for competition use only? i was reading on another SM forum that some bikes have certain letter or number in the 8th spot of the VIN flagging it for competition use only.

as far as brakes, 320mm up front and what in the rear? ive read that you can use the stock caliper with a spacer or w/e and use a 320mm disk, this still true? will this still give me them "one finger stoppies" i have heard of? if it is true, i could get away with keeping the stock rotors on the stock wheels for the dirt fun. just remove the caliper spacer. and swap wheelsets.

The wheels, fork legs, rear shock and fender from motoxotica would all just bolt on eh?

thats all that i believe needs to be addressed for legalizing the bike.
I really appreciate your responses guys, Thank You!

sorry for the long post with too many questions.
ive been very excited about Husaberg and SM since i heard the name in a local sport bike forum. i did lots of research and decided i wanted the 08 FS650. they didnt make it over here apparently, but next years have FI (wondering if the mapping can be changed with something like a power commander if a guy were to get a full exhaust system and intake upgrade)!!!
have yet to ride any SM yet.
for the record, i own a 2000 suzuki katana 750 and an 1993 kawasaki kdx200 currently.

Again, thanks a bunch!

To clarify, front 21", rear 18". Same as stock. 45 tooth sprocket gives more highway legs but don't have to change chains between road and dirt set-up. Poor man's supermoto. By the sounds of it you want the full Supermoto set-up. If you got the cash go for it, but it ain't cheap.

Don't know about the VIN being flagged for competition use. In BC we don't have that. Here you can convert any dirtbike to street use by getting an inspection. Just have to install the mandatory parts. Look into your local laws.

yes, thats another thing, dont want the chain swap.

just thought of it, im assuming speedo's are required? is there any speed sensors on the bikes? or do they make the digital ones i see all the time, with a magnet on the spoke and a sensor on the fork leg?

Shorty, As far as the lighting, BOSS sets all 08 H-berg with enduro/FE lighting. That is Head/Tail lights, but the brake light and turn indicators are easily done by BOSS. Call Dan for the fit to your bike, that is a great price for all those SM goodies.

Yes, speedo is required and is stock eqipment on 08 Bergs. Just like you describe, magnet and sensor. Regarding 09's, we are all waiting to see.

well i did a bunch of researching here. i wanna let you guys know about what i think would work and if you guys can foresee problems with any of the components.
prices are in USD i believe, as most sites are from the US i guess.

Wheels - Warp 9 17" wheels - come with a 320mm wavey front rotor, caliper relocator, rear comes with sprocket of your choice, and a wavy rotor. they are ~$950

Tires - not sure yet, something good for street obviously, but that will handle some grass / gravel a bit, no knobbies. no more than $300

Speedometer - acewell ace-3100. has speedometer, odometer, all your trip counters, top speed average speed, tach (dont know how it gets that info). ~$150

Headlight - still kinda looking, so far the black mamba is the one. we'll say ~$100

Handle bar control for lights, flashers and w/e else ~$70

handguards - loving the Zeta XC with flashers, im assuming i have to buy the Zeta armour handguards, bent or straight, does it matter? ~$125

Tail light and flashers - DRC edge tail light with 601 or 602 series flashers. also has a plate holder and light. ~$100

IC relay for flashers - im assuming ill need one ~$25

Horn - i would love one of them "air" horns that dont require any hoses, all in one small unit. they draw about 18A though, would that be too much? if so, a dual horn setup ~$40-50 (regular or air)

Hydraulic brake switch - is this what i need? http://www.motostrano.com/hybrlisw.html will that light up my brake light when either brake is applied? if not, what am i looking for? ~$25

So the grand total there is about 1900 bucks! thats not bad in my eyes!
also i over estimated on everything, i looked at the prices, just rounded the numbers up.
am i missing anything? is there any conflicting parts?
is there any sort of wiring harness for the bake and flashers or will i get what i need, other than the IC relay, with the lights?

Thanks guys!

Lachapelle Racing Products sells kits, Sicass Racing I believe, that have all the switch gear, brake switches, and connectors to work into std KTM harnesses. The other way to go is to order all the individual OEM harnesses from Husaberg ( as the Euro bikes are all street legal ) and go that route. Don't forget to get a dampened rear wheel, you'll save yourself some tranmission grief. Once you've got the 570 built, there is not much on the street that will be faster, the litre bikes will beat you in a lights race, but the little bikes will be left in shame. have fun

Thanks fry! im really looking foreward to doing this!

What is a dampened rear wheel?

im not worried about litre bikes, or any other bikes really, not many around here that can actually ride. anyone can hold the throttle open while going straight ;)

as far as switches, where do they hydro brake switched connect to the system? wouold it be easier to go the mechanical route or no?

A dampened rear wheel is also known as a "cush drive" or "cush hub". Google it. Basically its rubber dampers installed into the rear hub that create some play between your driveline and the road. Road tires on a non-dampened hub transmit alot of force into your driveline( sprockets, chain, transmission).

Hydro brake switches plumb into the master cylinder usually. KTM/Husaberg have a microswitch that mounts to the front brake perch- $50.

Your in the ballpark cost-wise. But don't get too ahead of yourself, wait until you see a production 2009 model.

Best of luck with the project.
