my starter slips always when it’s cold and half the time warm. I thought I was told that there is a way to fix the sprag spring by tightening it up or something of that nature. Is this true

first thing would be to remove the kicker, and the water pump crap, then the cover. hold a finger on the shaft of the small gear at the top (torque limiter), to keep it from falling out, hit the start button and see which device is the culprit. could be either.
if it's the sprague, a fork seal spring aroud 40 mm will tighten it. if torque limiter, it takes a little machining.
