Getting my '98 FE501 Going, 2000 Fuel Tank Fitment?

Does anyone know if a 2000 model tank will more or less fit a 1998 model?

i would say yes, because i had a 98 fe400 with the fc tank that looked just like my 2000 fe400 tank. you just have to plug the vacuum line that ran the fuel pump. and cover the front air intake.

If I hadn't sold all my FE650 stuff I could have checked. I'm fitting a FCR MX to my '98 FE501 for giggles and I wonder if the stock tank will fit. I may be able to heat the bit up and deform it a bit, or not.

There's a cheap 2000 model tank I can get. The backbone is the same, and it may entail blanking off the front air filter.

I've got 9 kms of track on my block of land and an occasional blat on the old girl will remind me why I sold the 650, arthritis and old age.....

This is my loop, a mix of twin and single, drops in and out of a gully etc, a bit technical and good fun. Currently I do the occasional lap on the missus' KLX300, but I want to get the FE501 going properly again.

I figured I might need a FC tank, but wasn't sure. In the meantime I hacked up a scrap of timber and had a better look to see if the tank would clear the carb before I coaxed the tank into place.

It actually fits fine, so tank is in place and I can move forward. What I thought would be an issue isn't.

It hasn't run a for a few years, but did. Cold starting with its previous 'Mk1' FCR was never resolved, so I thought a new carb might give me a clue.

Its got over 800 hors on it, and looks well worn to go with those hours. If I can get it running happily, then I'll make it tidier and it'll likely only get 10 or 15 hrs a year going forward.

I don't need another project, but I like my toys to be functional ;)
 
I'd say that they don't swop, but I'm just speaking as an armchair general here.

The fuel tank Steve has is likely a 2002+ yellow one while the shrouds have 6 holes making the shrouds 2000.

on your 1998 steve, that inlet stub; is it one of mine or did you make it? It looks like it needs masses of work to look anything and certainly to be reliable!

I didn't buy the tank, just went looking on the off chance an FC one was about, and spotted the one above and wondered, hence the original question.

The old girl has been extremely reliable, once I could cold start it. It did drop a valve seat very early on, within a year of ownership and the stator went later on as they do/did, which was done up by SCR in Geelong and that failed real soon after, so a 'Sparks' one went in.

The manifold was one I came up with.

Fresh fuel, plug and tried to start it yesterday and no go. Got fuel, compression and spark. Kicking doesn't do it, nor did pushing it up the driveway and then trying to bump start it, so next I guess is checking the timing, maybe the woodruff key is not doing its thing, dunno yet.

The trick cold starting before was to stick a fan heater under it for 20 mins or more to warm it up, but it was always an easy cold starter with the Dellorto, which was all it was good for.

Not my priority project, and definitely needs a fair bit of work and $s to bring it back to pristine if I go that way, but it should go as is, because it did when last parked, and that will get me more interested I guess. And once operational, all I want to do with it is ride the occasional lap of my block, I have other bikes for going out the gate.

ignitions stop but 99% of the time it is the carb bunging up internally. Rubber can split with age, it also dissolves of course.

OK, you prompted my curiosity and had a 99 and a 00 sitting next to each other with loose tanks and seats

the 00-08 tank will fit, lots of work with brackets etc. I think it will also look like crap from seat to tank transition. see attached photos.

Thought this would be the case, fits, with adaption. Happily, not needed, but still haven't got back to it to get it fired up, too many other distractions.

With a fresh carb, although settings probably not 100%, a fresh plug, a healthy spark and compression it should go, but its not real interested.

I pulled the rotor off to check the timing, and maybe the woodruff key had deformed. All good, so back together and tried a few kicks. Sort of maybe barked, so pushed it up the driveway and bumped it and it fired 2nd bump. Wouldn't take throttle and then died. Bumped again and nothing, must go, so kept going down the hill way past the shed. Nothing, took me 20 mins to push it back up to the shed
