MT43 fit on 2010 FE450

I have a Pirelli MT43 trials tire and TuBliss system ready to install on my 2010 FE450. I was just browsing the Internet and saw that a lot of people have issues with the taller tire hitting the mud flap. For those of you that have already done this, how is the best way to resolve the issue?

I really like the stock gearing (13/52 I think). Will the taller tire make a noticeable difference? If I change to a 50 tooth, would that keep the resulting gearing about like stock AND solve the fit problem?

Or should I just lengthen the chain? If so, how much? Can I just add links? Or do I buy a longer chain? What is the length of the stock chain?

Probably have 15-20 bikes with that set up out of our shop and I don't sell many mud flaps. There $16 anyway's don't sweet it.

i run one. no issues.

didn't notice any gearing change, running 4psi.

I wore a hole in mine after about a hour of high speed riding with stock gearing and chain. Low sided on the street (trials on front) and have not run them since. Looked like there was plenty of adjustment left with the use of a longer chain.

I don't think it's an issue at all. I am running one on my FS 650 it has a shorter swingarm than a FE (20mm I think) I got a little burn hole on the mudflap when I first installed it, then put a longer chain on it and it's fine now.

I know it's a different bike than a 70° but it fits on a short SM swinger is my point.

The axle is located about 10 mm away from the back though.

If I understand it correctly, the stock chain is 118 rolls. If I move up to a 120 roll chain, how much farther back will the rear axle have to move? I am wondering if that would be too long and I couldn't tighten the chain enough.

When buying a new chain, I always get one that is longer than necessary. It is easy to remove extra links but impossible to add them without an extra master link.

Inspired by rensho over on advrider, I installed a couple of pieces of Velcro to my swing arm and mud guard. If it sticks, it should prevent the mud guard from bending back into the tire from air pressure when moving fast. I am not real confident that it will actually work, but I thought it was worth a try.

I noticed my mud guard had some wear marks from my D606 tire. I suspect during the few times I rode at 70 mph the guard blew back into the tire.

Disregard my Velcro idea. I had a senior moment. Velcro won't work because the swing arm moves relative to the mud guard.

I got my MT43 mounted up, and I only had about 1/4" of clearance from the mud guard. So, I bought a 120 link chain and installed it this morning. It was too long, so I had to remove a pair of links, bringing it down to 118 links. Stock is supposed to be 118 links, but mine must have been 116. I guess the dealer shortened it when he installed my DOT tires before I picked up the bike.

With the 118 link chain, I only have about 1/16" of adjustment range left, which doesn't seem enough to me as the chain stretches. So, I am thinking of moving to a 53T rear sprocket, which should give me a little more adjustment range and somewhat compensate for the larger rear tire.

Am I likely to have issues with the 53T causing the chain to rub on the chain guide or anything?

I have a 13/52 setup and I just replaced the chain too.

Same scenario as you having to remove 2 links.

Lots of adjustment left on mine. I actually only had to adjust the first chain once in 60+ hours by about 1/2 a notch so the chain didn't stretch much at all.

And as far as compensating for the larger OD tire, don't bother it not noticeable and there is so much power anyways.

Plus with the low pressure you run in the trials the OD probably works out close to a new knobby anyways.

That is weird. Here is my setup with the new chain...

As you can see, I am almost all the way back.

Canuk_fe's photo is about where mine was with the stock chain.

Ok I made a mistake.

I bought a 118 link primary drive chain and had to take 2 links out otherwise I would be like you, almost out of adjustment.

I was taking out the recycling and saw the old chain box

This morning I installed a 53T rear sprocket. With the 118 link chain and the 13T front sprocket, the MT43 fits perfectly. I have plenty of adjustment range as the chain stretches, and almost 3/4" of clearance between the tire and the mud guard.

Now the only question is whether I will like the gearing. I tend to ride slower than most, so being geared lower hopefully won't be a problem, but I won't really know until spring when all of this snow melts...
