Team Husaberg Rallye Racing Australia confirms that Brazil's #1 rallye ace Ze Helio has signed with the team to race the 2010 Australasian Safari on a Husaberg FE570 and challenge the Aussie locals for the podium.
A national motor sports icon in Brazil, Ze is 3 times Brazil rally champion and 2 times Baja champion, though it is in rallye where he specialises and is among the world’s elite rallye racers.
After he started off-road racing at 11 years old Ze took his first regional championship in 1993 and his first rallye race in the Rally Dos Sertoes in 1995 where he amazingly placed 6th outright at just 15 years old.
Ze “100%” Helio is a 5 time winner of the Rally Dos Sertoes, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2003, 1999.
The Rally Dos Sertoes is the “Safari” of South America usually run over 10 days and 5,000km across the wilds of northern Brazil. The Sertoes rallye has been on the FIM calendar as a round of the Cross-Country Rally World Championship and attracts the top international level full factory rallye race teams on a regular basis.
But it was in the 2007 and 2008 FIM Rally Dos Sertoes events that Ze Helio rocked the world’s rallye best with his speed and consistency.
In 2007 up against the might of the full KTM factory rallye racing team of Marc Coma, Cyril Despres, David Casteu and Jordi Viladoms, Ze pushed his near stock locally built Honda CRF450X rallye bike to the outright win by 16 mins over Despres 2nd and Casteu 3rd.
Just to show the rallye world that 2007 was no accident Ze again humbled the worlds best in the 2008 FIM Rally Dos Sertoes when he again triumphed over the full KTM factory team taking the outright win ahead of Despres 2nd, Casteu 3rd and Coma 4th. A feat no other rider has yet achieved, back to back victories over the full KTM factory team.
Also on the world’s rallye stage Ze is a 2 time production class winner, 2005 & 2006 of the FIM Por Los Pampas Rally run through Argentina and Chile.
In his first attempt at Dakar in 2009 Ze lead the 450cc class for the majority of the rallye regularly running in the top 10 outright up against the big bore 690cc+ KTM factory rallye bikes. After some bike issues near the end of the Dakar he dropped to 3rd 450cc overall and 12th outright. A fantastic result for a Dakar newbie.
Having sat out the 2010 Dakar, Ze is now fully focussed on taking it to the worlds best again in the 2011 Dakar in Argentina and Chile when all the world’s rallye pro’s will be restricted to 450cc bikes.
