As quite a few of you know, I've spent a considerable amount of time working on an exhaust system with silencer for the Husabergs. The thing that has taken the time in all this is the development of a silencer as I opted to make a silencer that was totally maintenance free without any packing material.

I've got to the stage now where I've run prototypes on and off-road to test them properly and I now have three potential systems to make available. It's still a few months off but I'm going to talk to manufacturers about costing the systems up to see if it's realistic.

The purpose of my exercise was to produce something with good power output yet without producing lots of noise, and even a quieter system without sacrificing power output compared to stock if possible. All systems have been developed using the 650 engine so far but will be made for all capacities. Noise testing has all been done at the new higher engine speed which is a mean piston speed of 13m/s as well as the previous 11m/s.

I'd like to ask everyone on this esteemed forum a couple of questions to get your opinions.

The systems I'd like to take forwards are:

1. A single silencer system which includes new headers, collector and silencer and is a direct replacement for the standard system. This system produces about 1 horsepower more than stock (somewhat more but I don't want to over promise) and in testing at 4752 rpm it is quieter than stock enduro exhaust at 93dba;

2. Using the above silencer just supply it as a slip-on silencer;

3. Twin silencer exhaust system - Ultra quiet - measured at 89dba at 4752 rpm and produces equal power compared to the standard system. Unlike any other twin pipe systems, it only requires a slight modification of a bracket on the right hand side of the frame;

4. Another twin silencer exhaust system - this one produces more than three horsepower more than the stock enduro system across more than 4000rpm of the engine rev range and in noise testing it is producing 93.4dba - under FIM noise testing conditions, this equates to measured 91dba;

All these system are therefore fully FIM enduro compliant with the plan that I take the ultra quiet version on to being of road legal status in the UK (as a first step).

As for my questions, what I'd like to understand is:

1. If you were to buy one, which would be your preference?

2. how much would you pay for a) full system, b) slip-on?

I'd really appreciate your input as this might help me get something together that is of use to us all while also in the hope of making it at least slightly viable. And lets face it, the only other real alternative at the moment is the Akro system.

Thanks in advance,
Simon

1. No 4

2. a) £250, b) £150

RE: Re: Your opinions please!

for off road id probably go for a single silencer slip on. full system if it offered a weight saving as well as the power and noise advantages., supermoto id be happy with a twin silencer, as above foteh full system.

price wise its the old thing, you want as much as you can for as little as you can. though i do think that 4 st exhausts are expensive compared to 2 st ones therefore i think you'd need to come in under the retail prices of the current 4 st systems.

keith prices id agree with

i see they all produce more power whilst being quieter but how do they weigh compared to standard?

1. # 3, but would have to be US Forestry certified for the USA.

2a. $400US

3. I use the OEM AUX tanks on my Bergs.

I'd agree with the first set or prices, & also the #4 (maximum horsepower & noise for me!!!)

would #4 come with new headers? am guessing it would split from the collector? what material would you be making it out of as i would be very interested in a #4 if it were made from Ti... also would it ever need repacking? not quite sure if i underestood you right! if not then i'll have one today!!! i re pack my akro every month and its a hassle i could really do without!
regards, ben

Thank you all for your input,

JoeUSA,

I'm aware US Forestry compliance would be a necessary function for any sales in the US. I'm fairly close to having an appropriate solution for that but need to buy and test according to the relevant ISO standard for that compliance.

As for the tank, do you have any side-on photos from the oem exhaust side so I could check fitment?

Ben_moto501/cypher,

weight saving - yes there is a weight saving. The single silencer is considerable lighter than the oem silencer and the twin is about equal to stock and lighter than other aftermarket single silencers such as Doma.

Packing - no packing required, therefore no re-packing or maintenance. In the industry it is what they call a pure reactive silencer rather than the usual oem absorption type.

Headers - yes new headers supplied as that is where some of the advantages come from.

Materials - stainless steel initially, probably Ti on an order basis unless demand is good.

System splits along the collector.

Also, I plan to supply spare components so if a part is bent or damaged, it's replaceable without buying a whole new system.

Thanks again for all your input.

Simon
