2 Wheel Drive

Interesting. Ran across it surfing Dakar news. No Bergs, as has been mentioned earlier. Really a shame, with 264 bikes in it...

Anyway, not sure what has been posted on this 2WD stuff. I recall seeing some KTM photos before, but nothing with this kind of description. I wish there were more detail regarding the pump "attached to the head". The system looks really slick. Not really a true 2WD, IMHO, but seemingly quite effective, and not too bad a hit weight-wise. I give it a preliminary thumbs-up.

Any one ride/seen one?

Any thoughts?

I have a issue of Dirt Bike or Dirt Rider from last year, can't remember which, that tests the 2WD Yamaha.

had a short ride on one, nearest thing i can descride it to is a basic 4wd car, that feeling you get when you switch on the 4wd and you can feel the front wheels pulling.
seemed to pull out out of soft stuff where the stnd bike digs in.

way expensive to buy new and haven't seen many 2nd hand.

believe that kurt nicoll used one at erzberg a couple of years ago. think it was the same system as the yam just grated onto a ktm.

I heard they stopped development on the 2WD concept as well.By the look of it they used some of what they learned to come up with the power steering on the yfm700f... :chuckle:

There actually is one of them in Canada. Yamaha Canada owns it and takes it around to events to gauge interest in the 2WD system. Although I havent ridden it, my buddy has and wasnt that impressed with it. He said it was very heavy and you really had to manhandle it to make it turn.

Yamaha Australia used them in the Australian Safari one year.

Had issues with punctured oil pump drive chain covers (thin alloy) and also lots of leaking fork seals due to front wheel spraying rocks itc up onto frame and richocheting back onto fork tubes pitting them apparently.

Yamaha Australia were importing 25 for general sale too at one stage- none of the reports in magazines were overly kind to the 2wd bikes.

Dont know if they sold the 25 they were planning on selling to the general public in the end.
