X2 Headlight

for those who are using a X2 on the 09 FE models,when I located unit on the fender pins the middle of the light hits the factory computer and harness before you can fasten the rubber straps.How did you make this work out?
 
If you haven't already.........

Take off the factory wiring harness mounting plate that holds a few of the molex plugs, remove the plugs from this plate and make a tidy bundle of the wires.

There is an aluminum bushing under the computer that the number plate butts up against. The top or peak of the X2 back cover will just rest on this bushing in the little notch of the bottom front of the computer.

I had the same drama's that you had but, I think you will find as I did that it fits just right. I thought that the arms on the X2 mask should be a little bit longer myself.
 
as Dale says, remove the bracket first. I've also found that grooming the wiring to either side of the steerer tube makes for easier installation. move half to one side and the remaining wiring to the other. some wire clamps or tie wraps fastened to the 6mm holes which used to retain the bracket helps too.
 
I mouned the light,have the trail tech switch but have not yet wired it.I was thinking about getting the Euro model multi-function switch to use instead so I can just use the factory harness.from what I understand,the HID doesnt use a lot of power cosidering its output
 
nope. the candlepower put out by a HID light for a given power input is greater than for say a halogen lamp. HIDs are 35W, or less than 3 amps per. the halogens are typically 55W or almost 5 amps.

Gentlemen,

You are both right. HID lights typically put out 3 times as much light per watt than a Halogen. The color temperature is also quite different with HIDs putting out a much bluer light that a Halogens more yellow light.

The problem with using the stock head light switch as i stated in another post is that, #1, you can only select one light at a time, which defeats the purpose of the X2. #2, the lighting circuit on the stock bike is fused at 10 amps, where as the X2 harness is fused at 15 amps. Which would lead a reasonable person to assume that you should not be running both HID lights on the X2 at the same time through the stock harness.

I am in the process of getting the stock headlight switch to run the stock lights, and have installed the TT harness for the light that came with the optional bar mounted hi/lo/kill switch. I hooked this up and then cut the harness and installed some bullet connectors for the kill switch portion, and a two pin molex connector for the headlight power source. This way I can remove or install the headlight quickly, and just plug it in or un plug it.
 
I am probably not a reasonable person - I'm a former electrical engineer. :D

15A fusing is for the inrush current. HIDs take a big bite of it when they try to ignite. steady state is much lower. I had to increase fuse size on my R1200GS where I added (2) 35W HID driving lights. The 50W high and low beam HIDs I also have on that bike run through the CANbus.

if all one added to the stock lighting circuit was the 35W TrailTech X2 HIDs, I would not be at all concerned about bumping the stock fuse up to 15A to handle this situation - assuming you wired the high/low to come on at the same time. (if you didn't the 10A fuse is fine - like on my 'berg right now)
 
the stock wies on the headlight plug are green,blue,brown,and white.the trail tech pigtail consists of red ,yellow and black.Which wires do I join to use the factory switch?
 
We have installed several of the X2's on 2009's using the factory switch and factory harness.. It works great. Use the power supply for the tiny bulb in the stock headlight that stays on all the time for your low beam. Then use the high beam power supply to power the large light on the X2. The light turns off with the switch and the small light is on for low beam then they are both on for high beam. The high beam indicator even works. To make things even easier, use harness number 54811001050 and solder it to your X2. Then it plugs right into your Berg and can be easily removed.
