Just an FYI for whoever may run a search for WP 50mm Extreme fork springs in the future.

It seems no one carries springs for these forks anymore. They were only used on 1997-1999 Bergs. Race Tech has them listed on their website but don't have and cannot get them.

Going through the KTM catalog, as they were used on KTM's of that period, shows all of the springs discontinued.

Luckily Factory Connection 866-220-1151 can have them made in any spring rate you want for $175.00.

The stock spring rate is about .42 kg/mm but this probably varies depending which rear spring was installed. In my case the rear spring was an Ohlins 696-10/5.3 which is the weakest spring available on a 1997 Berg so my front springs may be less than 42's. Nonetheless I ordered .48's for the front and will be ordering a new Ohlins 696-12/5.6 spring for the rear. This should work good for a 200lb rider...... I hope.

If a WP shock, OTTMH the stock KTM LC4 rear spring is a 5.8 which I have in my 98 501, along with 0.44s in my forks.

In 1997 Ohlins rear shocks were used and the swing arm had a link.

In 1998 a *********** shock was used and the swing arm had a link.

In 1999 a *********** shock was used and the swing arm went to a link less design using a *********** PDS shock.

If anyone else has a 97-99 (all came with *********** 50mm forks) please post your spring rate set-up with your weight and we will keep track of what works and what does not.

Steve:

Do you know what the stock fork spring rates are / were?

What is your weight without riding gear?

Husabutt,
I would bet that Cannon Racecraft in Oklahoma City could make you some springs for your application. They supply most of the aftermarket companies already, and make custom springs too. They have a website and are easy to get on the phone.

I have purchased several sets of fork springs from them and have always been pleased. May be worth a call anyway.

0.42s were stock in my 98. I weigh about 110 kg geared to go, say 240-250 lbs

For trail use the 44s valved to suit work well for me. I even run 2.5w in the compression leg and 5w in the rebound leg. They have been valved a few times and I've lost track of the current spec. When I was trying to do it myself it was all documented, but I moved on. I also run an extra 10 mm of oil over stock.

I reckon 48s would be OK for supercross or something, but they are too much for trail work. Its interesting that Yamaha WR450s now come stock in Oz with 48s and to get them to work around here we go lighter. They put 45s in the WR250s, so they end up with 42s or 43s and the 45s left over go into the 450s.

I know lost of people use 48s, and I've tried them in my 650, but they are just too stiff for me, I like my comfort, so I can ride all day and finish fresh and not be jack hammered. I use 46s in it, having also tested 47s. AKA one 46 and one 48. It had 44s stock.

Thanks Steve, you have lots of good info.

The Race Tech website sping calculator suggested .49 springs with a large tank and .48's with a stocker. I will be using the behemoth 5 gallon fuel tank so maybe the .48's will be a good match.

I was wondering if you could use different rate springs in each of the tubes. If they do turn out to be too stiff its good to know that I can mix and match.

I recall 44 were in the 99 model, and I experimented with lighter springs 42 and using more dampening per theory at the time. Also the first pds was soft and went through the stroke easily where the extreme forks did not use all the travel unless riding mx. The kick start bergs handled the suspension better than the electric so I recall. With the linked rear shock bikes and kick start only I recal the US guys went up a lot on the shock spring as I did, but he rode a bit too high and pogoed. 78Kg without riding gear. I think you could get away with 44 on the font and up the spring on the back?

Hi, gang...
Had Factory Connection rework mine from oem. (their headquarters are 60 miles away.) Had them revalve for softer suspension and woods riding.
