would a 2010 Fx450 make a good street bike.

I'm looking to convert a dirt bike to a street legal dual sport/ supermoto, the Fx450 caught my eye as one in my area appeared for a good price with a few tasteful mods done to it. I figure I need a speedo/tach, dualsport kit from sicass racing, radiator fan, and some more street orientated d.o.t. tires (later in the future I would love to get some supermoto rims for it) plus re-gearing better for the road. I live in Texas so I don't think I will have any problems making it street legal. The Fx450 i'm looking at is a lot cheaper than a FI wr450f even after making it legal, which is nice cause my budget isn't the highest.

My main questions would be:
I know the Fe450 would make a better road bike but is there any reason I would want to consider something other than the Fx450? Most of my riding would be on the road, more city riding around 45mph with no highways.

And can someone who has done this comment about their experience?

Thanks for your time, Ben.

Edit: Thanks for the reply's everyone, wasn't able to make time to see the bike due to 4th of July, maybe next time i go to travel to the town the bikes at i will get to take a look at it!

Hi Ben,

you probably know that the FX transmission has a long 1st gear and 2nd - 6th are short geared. It's more designed for the Cross/Enduro-segment.
Even with a longer gearing for street use (still depends on wheel size in the end) it would still rev up higher than a FE450.
But you can make it work, that's for sure. Just keep the different gearbox in mind.

kind regards
Chris

The close-ratio FX gearbox is indeed the main difference.

Some local FX owners really like the gearbox in the dirt. And: I would think that it might even be better on the street than the wide-ratio FE box. Better suited to stay-in-the-powerband style riding. If that's your thing.

The suspension is also stiffer out of the box. Which is probably an improvement on the street as well. In most cases.

As I recall the FX also has a tiny bit more oomph? Slightly longer and taller camshaft? Which is not the worst on the street.

So given that you can easily plate it, I think it would be pretty great.

Thanks for the reply's, i'm possibly going to look at the bike on Saturday and if all goes well it looks like I might be the new owner!

I still would love to see some photos of one converted if you guys know of any!

If you want to see some photos of a proper SM conversion of an FX450 then check out "70 degree riders group" on facebook. Check for Darren Challis.

My fx450 in full dirt set up is a blast up to 50 mph on the road with mellow turns . It’s a torque monster the 570 felt a little more snappy but not by much due to the gearing in the transmission.

late to the party...
Did you get the bike? I raced an FX450 in supermoto competition for a few years. Only thing I didn't like was how heavy the bike is. Felt great, handled amazing, till you got it airborne....then it gained 20lbs!
That said...It would be a blast as a street legal sumo. Just know if you gear it for hooliganism/wheelies, it'll be a little short for highway riding, and visa/versa. The nice thing about that engine is the oil circulation system was designed so it didn't starve the gearbox like the RFS KTM's could when running high RPM for long stretches of time.

Sadly before I would be back in Austin it sold so I wasn't able to buy it, really wish I had though as finding a Husaberg somewhat close to me seems to be impossible :(

I have a FX450 i bought specifically for motard racing. Hated it! I would constantly loose the front end. My 570 isnt any better. Pull the rear axle up front as much as i could, ran 16mm triples, stiffer springs and valving, just could not get it stable in the front. Borrowed a Husky 450 and whoa what a difference. No comparison.

The close ratio 6 speed is great for the road.
