Is anyone running one of the Maico
SMs?At 222lbs and 80hp it seems
like it would be competitive.As
a 2st fan it would add some spice
to SM racing to see one running.
Also,here in the US,see nothing
but KTMs up front in the open class
is getting a little boring.

well, not really competitive.
in Greek supermotard championship John Boustas (the best of the best and also WSBK rider) few years ago use to race with a monsterous maico 620 sm overbored to 685cc
it sounds incredibly fast machine but unfortunately was not. it was unbelievable hard to tune, top end power had about 10 hp variation from one day to another due to weather change and power delivery really sucked. it really exploded from 500rpm to somewhere in mid range and then zip, nothing, end of story! as a result was sometimes not to be able to keep up with a KTM VDB replica of another racer's.

maybe in stock edition they are better, who knows.....who cares........in fact i do  i would love to had one 620cc sm but don't know if they are still produced(they were not expensive if i recall corect). i really loved them......

last year gilles Dej raced in my class,650 national, but he was faster than anyone on the track.

He also rides 125cc motocross, bur after Namur he will choose, go for motocross or supermotard(supermoto).
Normally he would ride for ktm slide zone team from Bougelet with a ktm 610 sxs.but after some problems he came back to FESIAL the Belgian Husaberg importer.

I predicted on a Belgian forum that Husaberg will sell al ot of Bergs because of the good results of our Belgian rider.

All the other Belgian riders did well; Seel,Delephine,Bertrand,Dejonghe,.and late in the afternoon the struggle against Everts--Pichon---Smets.

Close racing between different kinds
of bikes is exciting. One brand racing
is what killed flat track. (H.D.)

Just as a point of interest with regard to Maico and big two-strokes –

The best place to get info on Maico’s directly from Maico is Maico the site is down now but I am sure it will be back.

The Maico MX500 engine lives on in many derivatives. Maico still produce bikes to the best of my knowledge, though they have hovered between solvency and insolvency for about 15 years.

One user of Maico engines is ATK who buy their engines from Maico They make a 620 and 700 model. Note their 620 is 616cc and their 700 is 685cc.

Zabel Racing developed the original 620cc’s from Maico MX500 in the early 1990’s. Zable in co-operation with Hewa Power tuning and Maico developed the 620cc for Sidecarcross, then a 685cc and finally a true 700cc. The 700cc looks very different from the 500, 620 and 685 which all look alike, the 700 Zabel is a case reed motor and is very powerful.

Note none of the above engines display the difficulties that oyk spoke of they are all good engines.

Additionaly MTH produce 650cc two-strokes for Sidecarcross, and BSU/MVP produce a big-bore kit to take KTM MC500’s to 688cc.

So the big two-stroke is not quite dead yet.
