Will it be okay ?

Hello - first time here. Just bought a 2005 FS650e on ebay impulsively, not reading anything . I new last time I was into dirtbikes (WR 400) that Husaberg was having some troubles with their bottom ends but just assumed that they would have it sorted by now. It has 20 hours on it and hasn't been raced . I just want to hear something positive about these engines. I only want to commute 18 k's to work and 18 k's home. It is a dead straight road (mining area) and wil usually sit on 90 - 100 km/h. I will change the oil every two weeks. Will it last with this kind of easy life ? I don't really have anywhere here to ride hard , and bought it because they look beautiful. Truth. It's the art that got me. Now the practicality is scaring me! Should I sell it and buy a xr650 or will it last? Is ten thousand k's too much to expect out of the engine with this mild riding ? I also have an older Ducati so I know about maintenance! So basically my query is if most of the problems listed on this sight are due to racing/ off road, or even taking it easy will I have trouble with the mains/ big end , etc. Thanks, Jake.

I think you made the wrong choice given the current scenario. The Berg is a SM race bike and is best suited for that. Durability is not that large of a concern when compared to other specific built bikes of that caliber. Will it hold up to 10K of low maintenance and commuting, hard to say. I would give it a "not likely".

Using the Berg as you intend is like going quail hunting with an AK47.

I'm not worried about valve maintenance or even piston, rings, but do mains last a while usually , and if not is it a big job? Put it another way, is it even more maintenance needy than a yzf 450 ? It's a shame as I just moved from the hills in Brisbane where one of these would have been much more suitable . Thanks for the reply Berger !

300 engine hours and 8000 miles on my 05 FS650E.

Aside from fixing a broken exhaust valve spring at 6000 miles all is well.

It will require less maintenance than if you raced it, but will require more maintenance than a DRZ, which seems to be the most popular dual sporter used for commutes out there (from what I saw).

Goatman, stick your location in your avatar so we know where you're at.

Look after it with new oil & fresh filters & ride til it goes bang. You're going to loose money if you sell it now anyway so have some fun first & worry about the longevity of the engine later. Anyway, if your workin out the mines, your loaded

Nice analogy berger.

Supertireguy - that's what I needed to hear the most .I think I'll keep it and give it a go and then I can let you all know how it stands uo to this kind of ***** riding.
I can at least pull a few monos up this boring stretch - I read somewhere here that they come up at 140 !
I'll gear it up a bit and look at fitting an oil cooler. Is there a kit to buy ready or will I have to modify one from something else?
I remember my WR 400 when I changed it to YZF specs by changing the valve timing that a mechanic told me that it would be not last as long - be less suitable to commute on. Has anyone changed the valve timing/ reduced compression/ whatever to make the 650's last longer ?
Thanks for the help - Jake.

the wr had two cams. you have one so you won't be changing the timing. it'll be fine, just ride it and be sensible about the gearing. 16/48 i'd say will be ok, anything taller actually causes more stress not less.

regards

Taffy

Well, that won't last very long - you'll be pinning it in everywhere in very short order and then you'll be surprised than you only wear out the rear because the front is never on the ground - that's the only use for a straight, I think ?

Just ride it and enjoy it and if it goes wrong it's fairly straight forward to fix. Because of the riding you're planning to do I don't think you need an oil cooler either.

16/48 gearing would be far far too short gearing for what you're doing.

All the best,
Simon
