Why Do My Double Valve Springs Fit?

HI Guys,

last night i removed the old conical valve springs from my 07 FE650e head. I fitted out the outer spring of the DVSK as it says in the instructions and checked the rocker cover for a fit and it slipped right on. i thought this was strange as the instructions say i will need to hone out some of the alloy, but when i look up inside the rocker cover it appears that there are already 4 hone marks over each valve spring. Is this normal? On the document pictures where Taffy is putting the red felt pen that honing is NOT there.

Just to make sure i put some white mark up paint on the rocker and wrapped a cable tie around the top of the spring and fitted it up again and it still slipped straight on! Installed height of the springs is 36mm. So i grabbed the feeler guages and they slipped down beside them easily too through the tappet inspection cover holes. The engine has never had the rocker off before so I'm guessing that honing is factory on the 2007 model?

well you got lucky, don't worry be happy, last time that happened to me I hung on for the ride with a grin

at a guess your valves are worn into the seats or the seats were cut deep enough to get 36mm installed length , mine were about 35mm installed length

Sorry Bushy, yes mine would be 35mm or so with the bottom shim, 36mm without that shim in there. I am seriously thinking about bolting it back together without honing any more out unless anyone can give me a good reason why not to.

the early heads need it but the later ones don't it would appear. without having an exampl of every head to check and the history of husaberg i figured it was the best thing to do until i got some feedback.

regards

Taffy

Latest word on my DVSK, i did end up having to take about 2mm off the rocker cover edges as a precaution once i had fitted the inner springs to the valves, but it really was minimal. The end result is definately more bottom end torque and with the new cam chain it is noticeably quieter and no rattles which pleases me just fine. I used the Sebasto RTV black sealant for the job and it worked a treat, not a weep of oil anywhere. Top Gear KTM in Seaford VIC hooked me up with the gaskets - good service and they express posted them to me.

I took her for a thrash on the weekend balls deep in mud and boiled her about 4 times, still need to get that fan kit happening. The power of these things is just ridiculous. I love it!

thats what I found on my little 400 although it seems exagerated perhaps on your 650.

good stuff!
