Which to buy 2010 FX or 2009 FE

Hi new member,

Been reading old reviews etc trying to decide whether to purchase an 2010 FX 450 with 20 hours on it or a 2009 FE 450 with 114 hours on it.

The issues that I am dealing with are the type of riding I do is technical woods type riding. I can't test ride either of the bikes as they are in different cities.I have ridden the Fe 450 2009 when it first came out but bought the 390, it got stolen before I got to fully know it.

With the FX I am worried the with the aggressive mapping the rear wheel will break traction more and with the close ratio gearing it will be too aggressive. But it is the better bike with ridiculously low hours and better suspension.

I have a 2015 KTM EXC, gentle giant. But I am the greatest fan of Husaberg and especially the 70 degree motor more excited about getting another than riding the 2015.

Any comments would be highly appreciated;)

I have not tested a FX but I have had both open and closed cartridge forks and I found the open more plush out of the box. Both can obviously be tuned but in slow technical i wouldn't pay too much attention to closed vs open.
The FX has a closed ratio gearbox.
The FX has a 19" back wheel.
The FX do not have a head light (not sure how the loom look and what is missing if you want to add it)

So on paper the FE should be your choice if you do technical wood.

20h vs 114h. Sure hours count but these bikes hold up very good. I wouldn't be to concerned by the 114h. It depends on the owner if it was mistreated or not, but with normal use and maintenance it will be just fine.

What price difference are we talking about?

I think you are right about the better bike for my type of riding it is the FE.
Like you say,
Things I am not sure about is the 19 "rear wheel, whats that about?
The FX bike has no light and,yes I don't know, you would have to buy the wiring too, plus no tail light.
No speedo or tacko.
It is the gearing and the high first gear that worries me the most, apparently that can be changed with a 12t instead of a 13t on the front.

Both the bikes have had older, careful, owners ,so like you say, the hours are not really the issue. Although a 2010 bike with 20hrs is getting rare.

FX (equal in NZ $to American $ ) of USD $6500.00
fe $5500.00

19" has a bigger rim but the same outer diameter on the tyre. The result is.lighter wheel but less rubber/air between the ground and rim.

I rode my FX in the woods and it was a blast. With the gearing changed to suit the type of terrain, the taller first gear was never an issue.
A good friend (faster/better woods rider than I am) ride my bike all day in the woods after I hurt myself and his FE570 decided it didn't want to run. Super tight single track, lots of elevation changes, etc. and he couldn't stop raving about the FX!
Said it was incredible compared to his 570, which he sold and bought a KTM 450 XCF because he loved the FX450 so much more than the 570.

If I'm not mistaken, the wiring harness to plug a headlight/taillight in is already there.

I doubt you could go wrong with either bike, at the end of the day...

Thanks for the comments and help guys, I it helped me heeps with main issues, have bought the FX.
That's good it meant I don't have to change my username on the form.
What is it about blue berg juice that is so addictive.Have previously owned 2008 Fe 450 and 2010 390. Anyway big respects to the forum mentors and Introduction to members glad to see it looking sharp and more relevant than ever!

I have the 2010 FX450 and the 2011 FE 570.

My FX is way better on the single track. They may be a close ratio 6 speed but not that close as they were an 'open' bike not a 'closed course' bike. I bought the FX for motard but it makes a better trail bike, an awesome trail bike. Don't worry about the 19" rear wheel except for tyre availability. The mapping is better than the FE. Open up the airbox, free flow the muffler and add a JD tuner/EJK tuner and you won't believe how nice and tractable it will run. I added a 570 cam and had 8 thou taken off the base of the barrel for approx 13:1 CR. It should have the lighting ability as does mine.

Awesome bike. It's going to be my dedicated dirt bike with the 570 being used mostly for trips.

I would get the fx. There are as many selections for the 19 inch rim as the 18. I also wouldn't be concerned with first gear...take into consideration how often you are in first gear (I spend more time in 2nd through 4th, so 1st gear is a moot point for me). Also, the guys I ride with and I are all faster B riders, so that has to be taken into account, as well. I loved the look of the 70 degree bikes, although I couldn't mesh with it as well as my 2006 FE450 and the ktm 300 two strokes.....and I'm back on a '12 300xcw.
