Just wondering what oil evryone is using. When i first bought my bike it was running on Motorex, howver after talking to a few other mechanics and researching the news articles on the net i have changed to BelRay Thumper Oil. I used to use
Motul oil befor the Berg ( KTM and HONDA), never had any isues with this oil. Used Shell oil in my KTM 400 and it only lasted 1 change, however it was great in a sports road bike.

So what do others use

i drink SILKOLENE , others use delo 400 or motul or motorex and so on .

they are all good , it's how often you change it that counts .

RE: Re: Which Oil do you use

squizz,
Belray is a very good oil my FE 501 lives on it. But in UK it does not come cheap. I have also been told that silkolene is a reliable oil, and this is reasonably priced in Europe. I recommend the Belray but the price for it in Australia may lead you to find a cheaper oil!

Hi Squizz,

I have used a range of oils in my 550, but have found Bel Ray Thumper to be very good, I used the 20-50w as our wether is not too extreme cold nor hot.

I am now onto Motul 5300 synthetic, which looks pretty good also, but is 10-50w - I tend to like the heavier grade, but it is just a pschological thing about heavier oil protecting better.

I would have no issue with running Bel Ray again, and for me it is one of the cheaper options at approx $15.00 per litre AU the Motul is dearer per litre, but when you start buying in 4 litres gets a little cheaper - Motul $65.00 4l vs BelRay $45-50.00 4 L.

Azza.

Maxima full synthetic 5w-50. Perfect luck with this stuff, '03 400 engine.
Change every 10-15 hrs. $12.00 U.S. per litre.

Use Anything And Everything

Motorex Synthetic, Chevron Delo400, Redline Synthetic, Golden Sprectro, etc.

I change the oil frequently so I basically use anything and everything. I change the oil filter every other oil change.

Over 7000 miles on my bike. Other than a broken valve spring at 6500 miles all has been well.

RE: Use Anything And Everything

Delo 400 in 15-50 viscosity, I change it every ride or two along with frequent filter changes, I have also used Castrol GTX Synthetic, it all has seemed to work, I think the main thing is to have the right viscosity for your riding temperature, and to change it often. Not original thinking, but it has worked for me.

RE: Use Anything And Everything

Most times Amsoil 20W-50, sometimes Delo 15W-40....

RE: Use Anything And Everything

Delo 400 - 15-50W. I change the filter every other ride.

RE: Use Anything And Everything

how often do you guys change the oil filter between these oil changes?

RE: Use Anything And Everything

is kzoo and I the only ones using amsoil? I run 10w-40 $9.00 a liter. did alittle research amsoil seemed to hold its own against every one. started using it in my f150 lightning and my seville, the auto blend at $6.00 a liter.as far as changing filter, its any where between 10 and 15 hrs or every other oil change.

Delo 400 15w-40 or Shell Rotella 15w-40. Buy by the gallon at Walmart.

Change oil filter & oil after every ride. Cheap insurance in my book.

Some of the oils you guys have mentioned are not available here in aus.

The main reason for the question was looking at weeds gallery about the amount of oil the crank bearings run in. The bearings are rated at a reasonably high rpm when in an immersed oil bath, however we are trying to achieve the same rpm with little more than splash lube. This places a lot more wear on the bearing and the inevitable is obvious. As most of us are aware there have been a few crank bearing failures in the community, so it is not a silly statement i am taking all care possible to avoid being one of these.

If there is only a small amount of oil going through the most important bearing in the engine i want it to be the best available

As I have discussed elsewhere, notably on my thread, 07 650 so far, I've been using delo 400 for some time with the valve gear on my 501 lasting twice as long and still going compared to Mobil 1 racing 4t used previously

Delo 400 is readily available in Oz and on a good day I've got a 20l drum for $70. Typically $25 for 5l from the local depot though.
