hi guys,

If you visited the site during the weekend, chances are you already know, but for those who are bound to ask the question:

Gone forever and ever.

Ever since my move into the tranquil woods, I've not been able to update the site, so we had been running behind about a year on security updates and such.

Two weeks ago, somebody began utilizing an exploit in the old system to create a "super user" for himself, which allowed him to change all the properties of the site. Things began missing, and in general, it just became a ****** deal. I'd delete his status, then he'd create a new one.

Thursday night, he created another account, and deleted my admin status.

So I began the search on how to patch the old system. However, it had been so long, that nobody was able to help, so I had a site that I couldn't administrate, while some dweeb in Washington state was.

Time to update.

First order of business is to back up the info right? Well, on a 19-23 kb connection, this is easier said than done. So I began backing up one module at a time, which went fine until I got to the forum. It's database consisted of 48 mb worth of data. So I crossed my fingers, rubbed my lamp, and started the download and waited. My connection was interrupted, and the download stalled, but no biggie right? I'll just do it again. Well, two problems with that:

1) I mistakenly ordered it to "drop" the tables after backup
2) The file was a temp file on the system, so upon server restart that night, it cleared the files.

So, here we sit, broken hearted...

I've already received one email asking why on earth I wouldn't back up the db, for God's sake, after all, we all know to do that don't we?

This is why it wasn't backed up.

thanks,

im in wa state...but i dont now a thing about hacking...so theres one innocent man! 8)

i really like the new colors too!

thanks for all the hard work on the site, i know without this place i wouldnt have a berg!

well, I wrote to the abuse dept. of the ISP, but rarely does anything come of that....

To be truthful, I'm surprised that it made it as long as it did with no updates.

I'm no php guru, and it's an uphill battle for me to fix even the most mundane problems, unlike some of the zoomy forums you would visit.

Hey schwin,

No worries we will have the site just as it was before in no time

Great job on new site design it looks great

Ps. There has been many a ocassion when I wanted to take a sludge hammer and leave my computer in bits. Did that once man was it expensive

Oh

BTW schwin i am missing my avatar Figured you know this but I just thought I would mention.

Sorry to hear about the problems, but atleast know you have some personal experience in this field, which will make it harder for the hackers in the future.

The best thing about this site is the members and administrator. What ever info we had in the fourms is in at least one if not more of the members brain. we may just have to answer some of the old questions again, but that is a small price to pay for the value of this site. Biggest thing I lost is tuts and cycleists phone numbers but I can get them again.
Glad you are back up and running.

Sorry to hear about all the grief you were put thru, but I'm glad you got thru it and have the site up again. I believe one of our local tourism web sites (yes here in Washington) went thru something like that and was taken over by a porn site. Good thing I printed off some of the important technical info an put it in my 'berg library, now I must remember where I put the library.

Jason:

The "new" site looks great. You are doing an awesome job!!!!!!!
Things will be as they were and better.

Hackers be damned.

NOT A HUGE DEAL JASON...we will just keep on pluggin..the crappy part is all the work you have done is lost .. if i can help let me know .i will be sending another donation this week ...thanks for all your hard work..tim

good

You do a great job Jason!
This just means that when someone "newish" asks an old question, people cant say "go check the archives" anymore, they will have to answer the question.
ps, I hope you got my prize posted before you lost all the info? haha

I am glad that you managed to resolve the problems. But i think it is a disaster that all the posts are gone. On this forum we could find some of the best technical details on bergs. I learned a lot, just by reading the posts of Lineaweaver, Taffy, YPVS and many more. Totaly different from the blah-blah found on most other forums. (example : visordown.com)
I cannot remember i ever saw a more elaborated article on crank balancing than the post on this matter on the forum. Or the many post by lineaweaver concerning camshaft design, stress on the valve train, on main bearing alignment, on the use of, or the removal of the balancer, on frequency of maintenance and i can go on like this.
In other words : it is very sad.
:(

sad

All right Scwhim. it is sad that all that lot got lost in the digital universe. but some times it best out with the old. and in with the new. questions can still be aske'd and answerd. on here wich is what it's all about. the new site looks fresh. nice one. :D

Jason, did you ask the server where uhe is running if they have a backup?
The new site looks very good, thank you for your work!

Robert

Hi Robert,

they back up their server-specific info, and I'm to back up my info. Great thinking though...

I now get physically ill when I see the old posts revisited on the forum... These are the types of things that keep people awake late at night until they snap and eat a case of Ho-Ho's.

You guys are all way too kind, though you're not supposed to cheer on the guy singlehandedly responsible for the destruction. I hope IRL, you all don't act this kindly to the guy who burnt your checkbook or Dale Carnegie "Win Friends" videos. ;)

thanks,

It certainly is not the end of the world! But, if my name were Dale, Taffy, or any of the others that have contributed (or should I say typed a novel), I would feel a bit dissed, for having to write all that again....

The new site looks great! Keep up the great work!

We could see this as a chance to be proactive with info. Maybe answer some of the obvious questions first, right?

I'll start: my cam bearings are SKF 6201's.

If they were the type of people that would feel dissed at my phuq up, then they wouldn't have been the type of people to help the members as much as they have...... (I HOPE)
