I know it's stupid, but I let the chain to drop into the engine, also the chain lock. :? :( Should I disassemble now completely? Please advice, if someone has made so stupid as me :x - FE 400 '99

dropping the chain is not a probelm!

undo the sidecover and 'fiddle' with your fingers, then hook a piece of safety wire or welding rod through the 'eye' of the chain and pull up.

it's easy-i'm always dropping the chain.

just rock the crankshaft gently and it will come loose. the chain CAN'T lock itself in the gears.

I think he means the masterlink. Get yourself a small magnet on a rod that you can twist in every angle. Try to find the masterlink/lock with it. I used this thing when looking for parts from the broken cambearing sometime ago.

Stop

Before you turn the motor over check that your cam is in proper position to do so. Or you will bend valves like Taffy if they hit the piston.

OK the piece after the lock, not the whole master link. Why turning the bike could be damaged the valves? Valves should be in upper position, when nothing push them. For sure it's my first engine disassembly and I'm able to do a lot of damages

valves

If you turn the crankshaft and the intake or the exhaust valves are open and the camchain is not on the cam turning it the valves will tend to get bent from the piston hitting them .

I don't think they meant turn the bike over. I think they mean UP side DOWN. You know like a back flip but with the motor off. If the magnet or upside down doesn't work then take the transmission cover off and you should find the clip sitting right there.
edit sorry I was thinking of the 2001 and newer motor for the x mission cover. I don't know if the 99 model is similar.

Tuflek,
If you have dropped something down the cam chain tunnel,it is a simple job to take the L.H. side engine cover off.you will have to remove the exhaust pipes first. Then right there in front of your eyes you will see your lost part sitting on top of the chain sprocket on the engine.I used to own a fe400(99) and in the time it took everyone to reply to your post you would have the job half done.....nsman

tuflek

when you next go to fit the 'split link' put some old rag around the cam sprocket to stop the SL falling in again!

Thanks guys, thanks! "put some old rag around the.." - Taffy this is really good idea  , the sad thing is I'm gonna miss this weekend

dropping things

when i split the damn thing i put a tie wrap about 30cm long to each of the 2 open chain link. this way i i drop the chain my shelf and easily pick it up when i am done by the tie wraps. easy and effective
of course, i had to swear a lot in the view of a dropped chain before i come up with this
