Hi, I'm off to look at and testride a 97 400 FE, without the starter and I wondered what, aside from the "obvious" i should look listen for?

Are there any known/standard problems with these bikes? Are there any Husaberg related questions I should ask?

Cheers

Phil

Hey Phil,
Bergs are particularly noisy. I like to say they sound like a broken dishwasher :D . There will more than likely be whirring and clatter from the engine. Unless you have listened to Bergs before it's hard to say what is normal. I would have to say that knocking, loud tapping and grinding are not the norm. It's pretty hard to describe in general.Thats probably why you have the lack of response to your post.
You may want to concentrate on how the bike starts and runs. Does it smoke or leak? Does it LOOK well maintained?
At the end of the day, it is what it is.... a 10 year old racing four stroke. The whole bike will probably need to be freshened up. A prerequisite for owning an older Berg is to have a strong mechanical aptitude or alot of disposable income.
Just my opinion.

orrrr.....you could just come ride/buy my freshened up 98 fe400 kickerthat makes no odd noises at all (sounds more like a sewing machine)

The SEM ignition is probably the weak link, solutions are on this site. If it starts easily and the lights work, the SEM is ok at this time. Ask what the oil change schedule has been, and what oil has been used. It will sound like a thrashing machine when sitting on it, running. Whirs and a little clatter are normal, thumps, knocks, clangs and bangs are not. If the bike looks thrashed and tired, it could be quite a project. The price and your mechanical aptitude have to be considered. It is not a bike that is easy to find a shop to fix it for you at a reasonable cost. Good luck!
