Hey folks,
A small group of us from the East coast are heading to Moab the 1st week of May for 10 days of riding.
Any suggestions regarding what to carry on the bike when riding?
Particularly how much water would folks suggest taking with them on the bike?
Any and all tips appreciated. This will be my first time riding anywhere south of the border!

Can't wait!

Now I just gotta get these bloody cabinets and painting done so the warden will let me go! :(

Just bring the usual.
Area maps
GPS
100oz camelbak
general trail tools
extra tubes
spare levers
spare clutch cover
body bags
You know, all the usual stuff

I almost forgot, bring lots of beer. You wont like the stuff they sell there :(

More water than you think you can ever drink. not only will you just get very thirsty riding, but speaking from experience if you are faced with having to walk out, you will wish you had packed more. Moab in May will be very warm and dry and you will dehydrate quickly.

Risky has it right, a back pack is very neccessary. Especially being maritimers used to the humidity, you guys will dry out like prune, so do take lots of beer to hydrate :)

water water water, beer beer beer water water water, beer beer beer

Lodging on your way to Moab

I live in the Denver area about 5 hours East of Moab. If your route of travel brings you through Denver you are welcome to stay at my house. I would like to join you in Moab, but I am having Kidney surgery May 1 and won't be able to ride for a while. Gary

Where to ride

You definately want to ride the Kane Canyon road. Then for technical riding I recommend Slick Rock park only 5 minutes out of town. For food, you can't beat the Moab Diner on the east side of the main street (HWY 191) 3/4 the way through town. Just some suggestions. The Moab valley camp ground on the NW side of town is really nice, as they have a pool, hot tub, and cabins to rent.

RE: Where to ride

i think berger meant rucksack with camalpaco te back of it. don't settle for a rucksack or camelpack. you need both in one. take a bottle of water that can be used for fuel later if required.

ever used GPS????

team up ith someone who si there regularly if you can. it's worth a stranger in the pack IMHO. you can buy everything that has been mentioned in the town.

regards

Taffy

it is possible that the weather could be perfect, but it is also possible that it could be warm. if it's warm, start early. i like to ride with a 100oz camelback, and i'll drink the whole thing in a half-day ride (60-70 miles of technical rocky terrain).

if i'm riding with a group i usually bring 1-2 flavorless lite beers for relaxing with while i wait and heckle at the hard parts. or to offer as a bribe when i need help getting my bike up something, lol.

if you don't have a good sense of direction, don't take chances. may is the time of month when i think it's dangerous out there because people underestimate the heat and do stupid stuff and die. the popular routes all have people on them throughout the day. don't try to take shortcuts.

oh, and stay on the trails please.

One of the guys we are going with is relatively familiar with the trails. He is a jeep nut and has been there 8 or 9 times before. Riding the bike there will be new for him though. We will have GPS, maps, and communicators as well.

Water, beer, body bags, GPS, Kane Canyon, Slick Rock, Diner, stay on trails, etc. Good tips! Thanks.
Although, I am not sure where on the bike to mount the beer and body bags!

T minus 3 weeks and counting :D

Longshanks - good luck with the surgery man. Awful generous of you to offer a place to stay. I am flying out of denver on the way home. If my flight gets postponed I will take you up on that. Thanks
