about 12 months ago i got my suspension on my 09 Husaberg FE450 done by terry hays.
forks - gold valves, .46 springs, skf seals and polished tubes, 120mm 5wt oil
shock - gold valve, bladder conversion, racetech P15 spring, 10mm lowering spacer, terry hays needle
sag was set at 105mm and 23mm static. Manual says 35mm and 105mm.
i'm about 6ft and 95kg without gear, so 100-105kg in gear. mainly just ride bush trails from rocky to soft loam, intermediate level rider.
When my suspension got done i was about 10kg lighter, no recently i have been having front confidence issues and thought my spring was too soft so upgraded to a racetech P20 spring. P15 spring is 7.5-8.8kg, P20 is 8.1-9.6kg.
I just tried the racetech P20 spring today and managed to get out and have a good day testing. I can't say the P20 impressed me, it felt noticeably stiffer/harder than the previous P15 spring. I found a good trail section that had lots of bumps/woops as well as just your normal trails and the junk they can have on them.
I wasn't able to check my race sag as i was alone so for reference i will use the 34mm/104mm approx 7mm preload combination i got on friday with no gear on and cold components.
I went for a quick ride to get everything up to temperature, came back and checked my sag, it was 32mm so i adjusted it back to about 34mm. ride was rough, tried adjusting all the clickers each way individually but they didn't seem to do too much at all. I tried to ride as fast as i could over the woops section as it was like i was on a pogo stick, couldn't hang on and hence had to slow down, repeated playing with all the clickers setting them at the soft, std and sport as per the manual.
after riding for a bit i came back, wound out the preload to about 4mm which gave about 39mm sag with hot components (not sure of race sag) ride was better but still not great, i could definitely feel i was faster but still playing with the clickers really didn't feel like it was doing too much. woops section was still to rough to hang on at speed.
came back yet again and wound out the preload to 3mm which gave a sag of 45mm, was certainly slower than the 39mm sag trial, woops section was still to rough to hang on at speed.
On a positive note, the front end felt more compliant today.
I'm thinking, if i can find time on tuesday afternoon i will chuck in my old softer P15 spring and set it back to the 23mm/105mm that i originally had it set at and run over the same section i did today. when i first got the suspension back from terry hays after getting it done it felt great, certainly not rough like this felt today. Can't remember what preload i had to get those settings though.
what are your thoughts or suggestions?
