What Keihin in a 501?

I read the Keihin threads already but could not find the answer to this question...

If I were to *eventually* change the original carb in my 2001 fe501e, and install a Keihin carb instead, would you recommend the 39 or the 41mm carb?

I have heard both... It seems you get better throttle control with the 39 and, if jetted properly, you should not get any loss in power.

But... the new 550 now come with a 41...

the 39mm is well big enough and if there is any gain from the 41mm it will be at the highest revs only and what's the point in that?

i put a 41mm carb on scoots bike and he can't find any change at higher revs at all.

Thanks, Taffy. It seems that Lineaweaver posted a dynochart that proves exactly what you said and even, it seems that the 39 has a slightly more regular power delivery.

i'm impressed actually by the difference dale has posted. that will be a very discernable difference nick. you would feel it as you changed gears and came upon 4, 5 and 6th gears.

note that dale says that both carbs were 'optimized' so it's a valid test.

I will keep the Dellorto and learn to master the impressive power from the 501 before f...ing around anyway.

But the dynochart shows that there "only" is a difference between 7000 and 9700 rpm.

How often do you reach 7000+ rpm when riding technical trails?

the point is that one often thinks of a big carb giving away power at the bottom but gaining it back at the very top.

this though-is all gain!

the 39 will be a big improvement over the 38 dell orto but not sure about yours which is a 40mm dell. most riders claim it to be smoother, start better, better economy, crisper but in general it's not immediately a faster carb.

when i went to FCR i went from a dell orto that i had done 40+ tests on to 'cooking' jetting just to get me going. if i checked my FCR now against that old dell i would probably describe the bike now as; 'bitchin'!

look for a 41, if you get it-good! but with all the racers around "it's gonna cost you a lot" as berger would say- "but that's only an estimate!"

Well, I alrady got the Keihin 39 for dirt cheap so I think I will either re-ebay it and try to make a profit or resell it to someone on this site.

I'll keep the dellorto for a while anyway!

taking it that you have blown your cover by describing the carb as 'dirt cheap' meaning you won't even attempt to make an outrageous profit here at UHE; what did you pay for it and how the hell did you hear about it?

don't tell me! kenny got his insurance come through :D :D :D :D

now that is funny! one day you need insurance and the next-he has a carb stolen!

nothing is as cheap as free nick-right?

No I got it for $125 from :)

The carb on the WR is still there and you know he will not touch anything on that bike he has it dialed in and modded like he wants.

That's the one good thing with this kid. It's more about skills, less about bling.
