What is it? A thermostat.

There is a black plastic housing spliced into my radiator hose. I'm guessing some sort
of thermostat of sorts. 08 model. Is this necessary? Can it fail? No dirt bike I have ever
has had this. Temps are pretty moderate here in Oregon should I just leave it well
enough alone.

Ah yes, the old thermostat question. One we have never debated here at the UHE.

Can leaving it in cause an issue? Maybe

Can taking it out cause an issue? Maybe

Can it cause your bike to overheat? Maybe

Can it cause your bike to underheat? Maybe

Are you an idiot for leaving it in? Maybe

Are you an idiot for taking it out? Maybe

The engineers designed it that way, so you should be happy and run it.
Maybe. But they designed some without too.

Can the topic cause a debate that could lead to hurt feelings, innuendo, and other divisiveness?
Absolutely. Every time it comes around again

Oh, while I am replying, what is the best oil to use and are Husabergs reliable?

ktmbigfan--I am just teasing. There is a little dealer there in Portland who knows a bit about Husabergs. Me and a bunch of others run his pretty blue hose that gets rid of the t'stat. It's been three years for me, and I am sure any day I will pay for my transgression.

RE: Re: What is it? A thermostat.

I know this little dealer hear in Portland quit well. He's fixed a couple of my non-husaberg screw ups. And gave
me a great deal on my current husaberg calling him on sunday afternoon is rude IMO.

What are you going to do. It's a rare bike. This sight is doomed to have the same questions asked over and over
by us noobs. Don't worry things will getREALl interesting for you guys when 09's show up.

I have noticed the blue hoses around.Just thought they were bling.

No problem with the same questions. We are happy to help. I was just funnin' ya. You have a great bike and a great dealer, and you will have a lot of fun on your new 'Berg.

Ktmbigfan i only hope that after a little more saddle time on your new baby your

name will change to Husabergbigfan!! I have removed the thermostat on all of my

personal units which stands now at 14 & have never lost one sinlge ounce of coolant.

I must also say that the oem system has been trouble free,I just like the idea of less

clamps, connections & hoses as well as the blue hose. Oh & cory when you feel like

i may be to busy or what ever by all means listen to johnf3's advice that goes for anyone!

I had the pleasure of sharing one of the ruts on some excellent two tracking for 2 or 3

days spent in moab & this cat has game :D & his ride was very well cared for as well.

Thanks for the props Rick. Looking forward the next time we get to ride together! Moab was the time of my life.

One of the fellows over on KTMTalk did a carefully controlled experiment on his RFS bike (close copy of pre 2000 berg). His results showed that the factory thermostat did a better job of controlling engine temp than running without the thermostat. In fact, with the thermostat, the engine ran measurably cooler. I can't vouch with certainty on his conclusions, but nevertheless it convinced me to replace my long gone thermostat.
