What if? valve adjustment!

Hallo again, fellow riders!

I´m curious to know what would happen if you adjusted the valves at
"the wrong" TDC?

Or what would happen if you adjusted them at the right TDC but too tight or too loose?

Maybe this is an old and common question, but I´ve searched the forum and could find nothing about it.

And another thing... what´ve happened to the FAQ link?
Am I blind or is it gone?

The reason for being on the "right "tdc is so that you can adjust both sets of valves with no tension on the valve from the cam. You can adjust the valves anytime there is no lift from the cam but if you are not on TDC you may have to rotate the engine to do the other set of valves.

If you adjust you valves in the wrong place in time on the cam you will have a lash that is too tight or too loose. If it is too Tight you will have a loss of compression and hard starting because the valve will not fully seat. If it is too loose you will not have the auto de compression work and you will not have the valve open long enough to let the engine breath correctly.

I hope I have not muddied up the water. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable can jump in here and help me out.

If valves adjusted on wrong tdc, (overlap) = valves would be real loose.

Bobzilla is correct, if on right tdc & you adjust too loose, decomp won't work as well if at all, also harder on valve train if run loose.

If adjusted too tight, less power & you could burn the valves/seats.

If you adjust the valves in the wrong place, the lash will never be too tight but it very likely will be too loose.
