What has failed ?

The berg has been sitting in the shed for a few months but when I started it the headlights would dim when I revved the engine - seems like a short ? Anyway so I decided to replace the damaged light switch with an aftermarket I had and it is not a simple thing. Not sure if I all is right with it.

Now the Bike won't start and there seems to be no spark. The stator has the following readings: Green and Black - 166.9 (normal 165 - so within tolerance) and Red and Black is 6.54k ohms (while normal is suppose to be 3k ohms from my research) When I kick it overI get a Voltage of about 34V on the Red and Black. Is there a problem here ?

I tested the CDI and it seems to have no voltage.

On a side issue the plug seemed to be loose in the Cap. Should it have the extra screw on knob ? When I put one on the SPark Plug it was too big to fit in the cap tightly but without it it is too small.

Thanks - hope you can help.

sounds like the stator has gone! sparks is the man to contact so PM him. he already has an agent in oz so in a few hours when you lot wake up you may find someone has already supplied you with the oz contact details. it will explain 90% of your problems. the other one - the plug cap? well given that your bike is 8 years old don't you think it deserves a present?

Thanks Taffy. My bike has rece3ived lots of presesnt already :) But A new cap might be the answer. It just didn't make sense to me if it was that loose how the connection was actually good enough for a reliable spark all this time.

Hi Aussieforce,

You seem to have soon sort of dry joint some where within the windings to give such a high resistance.
The voltage test is good but that is off load so to speak, it can pass the voltage but not the current, basically when you load up the system with the high resistance you get an immediate volt drop off.
The plug top is correct just the threads showing, sounds like you have a cap like I had just rattles on top of the plug, the vibration of the engine does them in.
Just drop me a line if you want your ignition stator doing. And mine come with a free timing mark.

Regards

Sparks.

My bike has only 80 hr of service, and the spark plug cap failed at the 70 hr mark.

I thought that it was a problem with jetting, but the cap was the reason of engine failure and hard start.
