What are the signs of stator failing?

Hi all, my 650 has had a niggling problem for a while which I have just put up with. When your going hard on the throttle through the gears it runs great but when it's running around town slowly it tends to cut out momentarily, open the throttle and it coughs, clears and runs fine again. Also occasionaly when you come to a near standstill it will cut out completely and will take a good few kicks to get her going again.
Valves are set, have played about with the jetting, won't run on any lower than a 205MJ, new attomiser and needle installed recently. Starts 1st kick hot or stone cold. This hesitation only seems to happen when the bike is hot.
Could this be an early sign of the SEM stator failing or am I barking up the wrong tree?

no! but it could be that you have an old plug and that you're still to rich at lower speeds.

Taffy

Very well could be. Stop procrastinating from the inevitable and get it rewound.
You have replaced the plug and plug cap right?

Thanks for the quick replies lads. I have gapped the plug but not replaced it recently or the cap for that matter, I'll try that before delving any deeper. I have not messed with the low end jetting either, I can't remember the actual size but remember noting it as standard pilot jet so maybe if the above doesn't cure then a smaller PJ is worth a try. Not got much experience with 4t jetting but when it cuts out it feels electrical, there again I can't say I know what a fuel related cut out feels like!
Will try the obvious first and post results.

Try checking the owners Doc for the correct jetting. Taffy put a lot of work in there and all the info is at your finger tips.

Another sign of a failing stator is that the bike will run fine at lower throttle openings, which results in lower cylinder pressures. But when you open the throttle up thereby increasing cylinder pressures, the weak spark from a failing stator will get snuffed out and the bike will bog.

Still another sign is that the bike will be running fine for a while, kind of like yours, and then will die and will not restart until it cools.

Like Berger said, get the Sparks rewound stator and never have to worry about that again.

Hi Freaky,

There are two simple tests you can perform, with the engine cold remove plug and cap, place the HT lead 10 to 12mm from cylinder away from the plug hole, on a normal kick it should jump this gap without having to leep on the kick start, if this is OK do the same test when the engine is hot, there should be no difference in performance, if the spark is intermittent or you find you have to reduce the air gap to make the spark jump constantly then yes the stator is on it's way out 100%.

Regards

Steve.

Been having some of the same issues on my '03 650 today. Had all the same symptoms as Freky described last year with misfiring and stopping for me on idle.

Tried to start the bike this week after the winter, but it won't on kick or el-start. Was able to make it run after taking it down a steep hill and went for a 10 min drive, but unable to start it any other way than this hot or cold. And the power in the engine was really poor, especially on the top revs.. and spark plug all black after the ride and jetting on standard settings.

The checks I've done so far is:

- Valve clearance is ok

-I have a blue spark on the iridium plug, but really small and even smaller one on the NGK. (Both new + new battery)

-HT lead makes a spark on 5mm, not 10-12mm as spark mentiones. But tested with no spark plug and turning on el-start

-Stator ohm is 3000 on black/red, but only 130 on black/green. (5-10 min after the short drive so the engine was not cold)

Is there anything else I should test/change to improve spark other than stator?
HT leed and cap? Any way to test these?

Just a quick update. Did the spark test on the head yesterday and it seems good so I think the stator is holding up ok. Took the NGK iridium plug out and put the old standard NGK back in, also gave the mixture screw half a turn out. Took it for a good hour ride and it didn't miss a beat, no stall, no hesitation and no bog so looks like it was a dodgy plug with a very intermittent fault.
Fork seals leaking now!
