sad to see the race & ride report site has very little on racing by it's members!

well anyway, my first meeting for 3 months and first ride for 2. i went to pretty much my favourite track which is whaddon. i didn't have to do anything to the bike as it has been prepped for weeks including two new tyres which is quite rare for me as i usually have one bald one on it somewhere!

the race was a 2 + 2 and we are now using transponders to clock in. when the minute clicked over everyone started bar me as my starter motor 'went through' about 6 times. then it caught and started nicely, making sure not to touch the throttle for a few seconds i let it warm and then got away just as the row behind me got going.

the track is a lovely mixture of grass, ditches, bogs at the low points, single track reed-bed slush and the MX circuit (see my pic left) and it pays to experiment and find new and quicker routes.

i had an excellent morning with just the 4 falls. one was a 3rd gear beauty as i knew i was going down and had 20 yards to think about it!

the new '53' cam was working well and so was a needle that i have had ground to my own spec. i simply don't need any more power on days like this and for once, on a really long straight, i found myself overtaking riders with ease.

as luck would have it i was due in at 12.36 and i arrived at 12.35 so no time penalties! by now it was a constant drizzle and the lunchtime was a sod as you sat in the tailgate trying to keep the rain off.

i put in just 7 litres for the afternoon and the bike now looked to weigh another 50lb's what with all the mud. but i have favourite parts of the track where i try and 'smash' all the mud off at no penalty in time.

i went to start the bike prematurely before my row and the bike would have none of it-dead!

luckily, next to me was #112 on an '03 FE400e and he noticed a spark at the NEGATIVE LEAD TO THE BATTERY so by jamming my finger in there the bike started with no throttle. trusting that the CoC couldn't hear my engine running i set off after a 2 second delay (to disguise any advantage gained) like a scalded cat in what was 'heavy drizzle'.

i caught up with #487 martin smith with whom i had swapped places about 6 times in the morning but he was a spent force after the earlier ordeal and i briskly tore past him. there was this rotten ditch which at 9am i had checked could be jumped if i took advantage of a huump on the right. making sure i landed back wheel first i made the jump for the first two times and after that the track was so wet i couldn't get enough speed up.

i fell a lot! don't ask me how many times! 10-14? because my hamstrings had gone to jelly as we stopped for lunch i was sure that i'd be exhausted in the afternoon but i think the rain and the slower pace saved me. no matter how often i fell i seemed able to pick it up and get going without that 'totally shattered' feeling.

mid way through the 2-hour stint i notice oil down the front of the engine which i took to be a loose rocker cover-but we'll see? the bike, which hardly ever stalls on it's side was still easy to start when it did. however the weather deteriorated even further and nobody could clear their treads. in the morning i had avoided the wet grass and stuck to the dirt tracks and now it was raining i was avoiding the dirt tracks and riding on the grass!

eventually i fell on the last lap when i took a back marker on the wrong side and stalled- the bike would have none of it this time but luckily two marshals wer nearby and we bumped it. alas i fell once more for good measure on that last lap and could not start it! i cleared crap from around the solenoid and pushed and prodded some wires behind the headlamp before i got it started one last time.

i must have lost 10 minutes on that last lap so all my hard work for the day was yet again gone.

last year i had a puncture and a broken ignition wire which meant i couldn't re-start it on the last lap so.....

anyway, i think for the first time i can say that the bike did everything i wanted of it and ran beautifully bar this loose negative wire.

anyone want 20lb's of mud for their garden?

taffy, nice story about whaddon, entering hare and hounds at whaddon next sunday, 30th Oct, my first ever event! It's a 2 1/2 hr duration. Any tips for novice rider?!

Sparko

that's a cotswold enduro club meeting. i had booked it up but i can't make it now.

advice? phew!!!!
it'll be 1.5 and 1.5 hours i believe making 3 altogether. i would say don't worry about being fast worry about being stable and not falling off. if you go off like a rocket you'll get worn out quickly.

whenever possible spin the rear tyre hard to clear the tread, don't be afraid to bounce the bike to clear the tread and mud on jumps etc.

if you have a husaberg you'll need to make sure the carb has a 1 into 2 on the breather because i get the feeling they'll send you through two huge pools of water.

reduce your tyre pressures to 10lbs and one day go to HD tubes and drop again to 8lbs or so. i trust you have MX tyres?

what else?
if you can stop when you get to an obstacle to check it out and watch where other riders have gone.

that's it really. good luck. whaddon is one of the toughest circuits to do on the eastern side of the UK. only wales is tougher IMHO.

:eep: taffy,
thanks 4 quick reply, have been out 2day greenlaning and general tooling around, conditions very muddy and slippy all over, struggling 4 grip,my ktm 200 2t buddies
gave me a bit of a thrashing 2 day! ex motorcrossers anyway ! me mere
road rider. Anyway my berg has michelin enduro road legals which have now had about 30 hrs road and trail use, front ok ,but, rear needs replacing before whaddon, should i fit mx rear instead of another road legal michelin ?

met a bloke last week who entered whaddon ,hit tree on 1st lap and broke
several ribs ! so i will take it easy !

avoid trees, i've yet to meet anybody who did anything but lose that argument!

new tyre for sure. i've never bothered worrying about whether a tyre was road legal or not MX or enduro etc. MX's have 40/60% tread and enduro have to have 50/50% tread.

i use dunlop D756 everytime whatever happens on the rear.

go for a bridgestone HD tube and drop to 10lbs rear and front. everyone will be going backwards compared to you!

taffy,

WHAT CAN I SAY ! TURNED UP AT WHADDON WITH MY MATE PISTOL PETE WHO HAD JUST PX HIS DRZ400 FOR A 03 FE400 THE DAY BEFORE ! THIS WAS OUR FIRST EVER RACE AND ALTHOUGH WE HAVE DONE A COUPLE OF MX TRACKS BEFORE, NOTHING COULD PREPARE US FOR WHAT WAS IN FRONT OF OUR EYES !! NO NEED TO EXPLAIN TO YOU ,BUT
IT WAS A APPX 5 MILE COURSE OF MX TRACK ,GRASS,MUDDYBOGS,STEEP HILLS,PLUS A APPX 1 MILLION TONNES OF WATER THROWN OVER IT FOR GOOD MEASURE.
WE STARTED FROM THE BACK IN THE SPORTSMAN CLASS AND SURGED OFF IN A MASS OF WHEELSPINNING AND SMOKE STRAIGHT INTO THE MX TRACK WHICH WAS FANTASTIC !! THEN CAME THE MUD,THE BOGS, THE RUTS, AND MORE MUD ! I COULDN,T BELIEVE HOW KNACKERING JUST ONE LAP WAS, ATER 3 LAPS I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE SICK !, PULLED INTO PITS AND DRANK NEARLY 2LTRS OF WATER,MY BUDDY THEN ALSO CAME INTO PITS FEELING THE SAME,HE HIS A COUNTY CHAMP SQUASH PLAYER AND 14 YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME,SO I DIDN'T FEEL AS BAD THEN!
WENT OUT AGAIN ,DID ANOTHER LAP , FELL OFF FOR THE 6/7 TIME ,REALLY GETTING TIRED NOW,STARTED 5TH LAP ,GOT T-BONED AT
THE END OF MX TRACK,BIKE ONTOP OF ME,FOOTPEG DIGGING INTO BOOT,BRUISED RIBS,NO ENERGY TO GET BIKE OFF.,A COUPLE OF SPECTATORS PULLED IT OFF ME ,MEDICS CHECKED I WASN'T DIZZY AND OFF I WENT AGAIN.
PULLED INTO PITS ,WHERE,MY BUDDY HAD GOT REALLY BAD CRAMPS, WE RESTED FOR 10 MINS AND CAME OUT AGAIN,WE BOTH MANAGED 5 LAPS IN TOTAL EACH.
WE BOTH PLEASED AND RELIEVED THAT WE FINISHED AND DID NOT GET DNFs !!
I HAD A TRIP TO THE HOSPITAL ON MONDAY MORNING,WITH A MASSIVE
SWOLLEN FOOT,ON CRUTCHES AT THE MOMENT !!
SELF EMPLOYED,SO IT HASN'T GONE DOWN WELL WITH THE WIFE,!

BUT WE WILL BE BACK,FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE, SURELY NOTHING IS MUCH HARDER THAN WHADDON IS IT ?

OUR BERGS DIDN'T LET US DOWN ONCE, 400 CC IS MORE THAN ENOUGH !!

CHEERS.

SPARKO.

agree with everything you've said and you've agreed that what i said was true!

my first meeting was a wet whaddon and no it doesn't get any worse on this side of the country. but wales is like that at some enduros.

you'll get better. note your drop off point where it all just deteriorated and you knew you were done? this is what we all work at to push back. i still fall a lot but at a faster speed and i've learnt how to pace myself for the finish.

yes, 400cc is more than enough.

regards

Taffy
