Weak spark

Hello Everyone,
I bought FS650 (05-06) last year but unfortunately did only 9mth on it - conrod bearing has gone. So I did a rebuild of the engine, This week I put rebuilt engine in to the frame - (drain old gasoline from carb, put the new one in to the tank) I kicked it for almost 5 minutes than I bring it to life. It was the first time.. and last time. It idles on choke for maybe 1 minute, I realized to try to rev it up - but engined stopped. I kicked it for almost another 20 minutes with no result.

So today I put out the spark plug and realized that there is very small spark visible only in darkness of the garage (closed doors, light off)-of course I try to change the spark plug, spark wire... . I measured the ignition coil (everything within tolerances), same with charging coil, pulse generator, and stator. The electric system is a hybrid, because I dont use battery, so the stator coil ( for the spark is rewired to act like a nobatery model ( 25 ohm ).

Before I did a rebuild it starts on first or second kick.

Where can be a problem ? ( I removed only engine from the frame last year every electronic instrument I left on the bike and did nothing with it.

Excuse my poor english - I hope you will understand what I tried to explain.

And Greetings from Czech Republic

Solved.

Lock.

you have solved this? what does "Lock" mean?

I would have said that your main bearings might have gone also and they need replacing. if the crank wobbles because of this you will have this problem until in the end the flywheel grabs the stator and wrenches it out. THEN you will definetely have no spark!

Taffy

I checked all the wiring, reinsulated them, I checked the grounding and resoldered everything on the stator.. And it works - so I have no idea, where was the issue. But Im happy, one kick is enough to bring it to life.

Hi from New Zealand,Iv recently purchased a 2001 550 fc,apparently its had the fe wiring loom put in it and electric start etc, anyhow the stator crapped itself on the old owner,he brought what is apparently a rewired stator from overseas and installed it,(it actually has 470 fe written on it with felt pen)but i am figuring this is the same unit as the 550?So the old owner has installed stator and tryed to get the bike going,(it hasnt been run for 12 months, but was running when stator stuffed out)but no luck, now Im the lucky owner(maybe)so iv had a look over everything, looks like it should, have a very weak spark and the bike wont kick over, decided to jump start it down the hill and it fired up,idoling a little high, but other than that sounded good, let it warm up a little and went for a short burst, shut it off and still couldnt kick it over, now after reading this thread Im a little concerned that the problem may be bigger than I thought, how do i know it my bearings are stuffed,if thats not it,dos anybody have any advice?thanks

Advice?
1) Start your own post rather than hijacking this one.
2) Read "the owners doc"
3) It seemed to run ok when started? If so, I would start with the basics. Valve adjust, timing inspection and perhaps go through the carb. I would not get flustered quite yet. I would get afresh plug and plug wire cap as well.
4) link to the "owners doc"

hey, thanks for that, sorry I realised once Id already posted that I probly should of done my own post, first timer,my bad,Iv put a new plug in as soon as I got it,but didnt touch the cap, will check that as it has a crack in the plastic,as far as the carb, valves, etc go,il let the ktm mechanic do that if need be,bit unfimilar with the husa\ktm,im just sort of hoping its a basic fix though,as it sounded nice on start up and there where no coughs or splutters, just cant wait to get it out on the trails, apreciate your thoughts, cheers

the stator in the sidecover is generic as you say between all FE models. The FC might have come with just a three wire stator and a shallow flywheel. so we need to get that sorted straight away OK?

nearly all the photos in the doc arte of a deep FE flywheel and not the shallow FC. go check?

check the readings from the stator. the one to watch is the red to green and you need 2800 minimum. the green to black is 160 and normally OK and proves if nothing else that the multi-meter is working!

as a 2001 MX machine EVERYTHING WILL BE WORN OUT.

here's a list and every single one is 'death by a thousand cuts'.

worn cam chain so poor valve timing
worn carb so runs rich
tuliped valves and seats
domed stems and cupped tappet pads
ignition timing wrong
follower bearings gone
cam lobes worn away
yes, your mains can be part of the problem!

good luck

Hi Taffy, thanks for that,iv posted a few photos on my other post *stator?weak spark?*,i will take the bike down to our mechanic and get him to check the stator readings, the bike seems in pretty good nick, although I understand that shes an oldy and probly had a good run,il be nice and gentle on her if i can get her firing up,fingers crossed cheers mate
