water pump shaft

Hi all,

After fitting Orangebergs seal kit and a new water pump seal everything is fine, weep hole dry as a bone, well worth the money.
The reason it was leaking coolant wasn't a worn seal but a groove worn in the shaft due to the seal, I have managed to refit the new seal 1.5mm further in the case and is now running on virgin steel. Is this a know problem or just normal wear and tear, not to sure how many hours it has done in total but when I rebuilt the engine 150 hours ago I never noticed the groove in the shaft.
Only problem is to replace the shaft it's an engine strip down job.

maybe try an easy sleeve

thin stainless sleeve to repair shagged sealing surfaces

another way is to shorten the spring which can compound the problem a bit for a short term gain. but it sounds like you got over it this time!

i'll start a thread on these metal encased w/p seals and get an opinion on them sometime soon.

This is what was recommended to me but I've yet to try it.
I think the oil seal design was engineered so poorly to provide lubrication for this seal. Now you've done the Orangeburg oil seal there will be no lube resulting in a short life for the water seals and a grooved pump shaft.....

aaaha

3x0.5mm screw to block the weephole and use no oil seal.

check the sight glass every ride for milky stuff and the radiator for oily stuff.

cheap fix ?? :D
