Water pump seal fitting probs

Hello all. I just got both seals that go on the camshaft from Dan at Motoxotica for my 99 FE501 but I am having trouble installing them. I noticed that the seals I pulled out had a rubber outer surround however the new ones are steel. Dan says that the ones he sent are the current replacements. The trouble I am having is that the new seals are actually slightly larger (by a hair) than the opening that they are supposed to go in. If I try to force them they will tend to peal the aluminum on the inside of the disk that the seal goes in. I have tried to heat the disk and cool the seal but it doesnt seem to make a difference. Anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas as to a solution? I dont feel very good about taking material off of the aluminum disk...

Hmmmmmm,

I'm surprised that the new style seals are supposed to work for the old style motor. The rubber outer type seals are quit a bit smaller than the metal out type.

I tried using the old style in my 04 because I had several on hand, it was clear that they would not work as there was not enough interferance fit to hold them.

You may have to bevel the edge of the seal, or the seall hole to help get it started.

You might try pm'ing JoeUSA for some advice, he has a lot of experience.

Thanks for the insight Dale. Its good to know that others have had probs with putting the old syle seals in the newer bergs and vice versa. Any ideas on where to get the old style seals?

Will,

As you have already probably found out, the seal in your 99 is part # 350 000-01, and with dimensions 10x18x4/4.8 and was used from 89 up through 03.

The one Dan may have sent you are probably from the 04 and up bikes, part # 0760 101843 with dimensions 10x18x4 BSL.

The KTM part # for this seal is 076 101842 with dimensions 10x18x4 B-NBR SB.

The 18 in the dimensions is the O.D. and should be the same on all 3 of them. I haven't measured, but if they are, the rubber coated one is more resilient and will fit into a smaller hole.

The KTM Seal Support (Gasket Support) is part $ 59036081100.

I suggest you call some of the other Husaberg Dealers, they may have the seals you need.

You could go to a Bearing House with one of your old seals and see if you can get a match up! If you do, make sure it is viton!

You could remove a few thousands from the bore of your seal holder and use the seals Dan sent you, or you could take your seal holder to a KTM dealer and compare it to the KTM part.

Let us know how you make out!

Regards,

Joe

The rubber ones fit rather tight and some of the fellows remove the valve cover, place the seal in place, and then clamp it in place while refitting the cover. A lot more work. I've always been able to install the rubber seal without removing the valve cover by lubing it with clear silicon and carefully installing it with the correct seal driver. Not sure what to tell you about getting the steel seal driven in. Try another dealer who may have the old rubber ones still in stock?

Thanks for the replys fellas. I think I'll try the local bearing place and see if I can match it. If no luck there I'll make some calls to other dealers to see what can be had. I'll let you know what comes of it all.
