Water pump impeller leak?

Anyone know what causes a drip from the water pump vent hole on a FS650? I saw a couple drips early in the day, and by the end of the races I could hear it boiling and steam was coming out the vent. I am only using water wetter due to track requirement. Ideas?
Thanks!

Time to change out the water pump seal. You lost your coolant and that is why there was only steam coming out.

When you take it apart you will find crud behind the water pump seal that got in there through the weep hole, which has helped ruin your water pump seal.

Get a small piece of 1/8" tubing from the hobby store or home improvement store and tap it in there, with a small piece of clear pvc tubing attached and run it down the motor a ways. This will keep the crud out, and you will still be able to see if you are losing a seal.

While you are at it you might as well get the Orangeberg kit and take care of the oil seal side as well.

I am placing my question in this thread (same subject):

my water pump shaft has been worn on the place the waterpump seal sits. So now its leaking a little bit, is is possible to place a waterpump seal with a smaller inner diameter (which seal should i order?)

Or is it possible to place an original waterpump seal further outward so the seal can run in on a 'fresh' part of the shaft and so it will not leak?

Hi ElSnorro,

Easy fix is this one, have had the same problem, all you need to do is get an after market seal 5mm deep but with the same 10mm ID, turn off 2mm from the face, now when you press it in flush with the casing the actual seal face is further out on the shaft sitting on virgin steel, problem solved.
Also like Dale says fit a small piece of tubing in the weep hole, also fill this tube with oil, this will keep the back of the seal lubricated and less chance of wearing a groove in the shaft, you can also put one of those filler cap vents on the end of the pipe to keep the crap out.

Sparks.

Thanks Sparks.

It is not possible to use an orignal water pump seal for this? (have a couple lying around here somewhere)
If i read the sizes of the original seal correctly (NBR10X18X4A) this 10mm ID, 18mm OD and 4mm thick(deep)?

Hi ElSnorro,

The problem I had was the seal had been pressed in in different positions, this gave 2 grooves on the shaft. The original seal is not wide enough to turn it any small, that is why you need a seal 5mm deep.

Sparks.

Ok, thanks.

I will check out if i can solve it with an original waterpump seal, if not i will order a wider one :)

ElSnoro,

I don't know if this suggestion will help you or not. If your seal is only dribbling a little bit when the bike is hot, you could try going to a coolant like Evans.

Evans has no water in it, and therefore runs at zero pressure. I sort of have the same issue with my 04 550, I ran the Evans for boil over reasons, but, a side benefit was that my grooved water pump shaft no longer weeps at all.

Hi DaleEO,

as i ride my berg on the track (SM) i am required to run on plain water, since coolant is very slippery when its being spoiled on the track..

Still thanks for the info, might be very usable for future readers of this thread

Yeah, had to do the same when I was running shifter karts.....................

Hi guys last question:
Is it possible to replace the waterpump seal from the outside, so i dont have too take my clutch cover of?

yes if you can get the old one out

I used 2 small stainless steel self tappers screwed into the steel, its close to the oil seal on the other side though

What is the orangeberg kit?

What is the orangeberg kit?

UHE member Orangeberg put together a kit consisting of a new water pump bearing, and a different oil seal, that eliminates any oil leaking out of the weep hole. The original set up's weak spot is a very small O ring that seals the inner race of the water pump bearing to the water pump shaft.

Orangeberg used to be a dealer down in OZ, but, has since returned the allure of the mines. However, he still offers his kit and great advice. Do a search for his user name and send him a PM and I'm sure he can help you out.

Did you find a source for a wider seal? I just replaced mine, but found a groove on the shaft. Still leaks with a new seal. Can't be dirt going in the weephole; the bike was only ridden on the street and kart tracks, no dirt.
