Warranty Claim

Just thought I'd put some positive feedback onto the wheel about my warranty claim on my new '08 FS650. Got 10 hrs on it now with 2 oil changes under it's belt & had 2 problems...Battery that wouldn't turn the bike over or charge & the illustrious oil leak from the waterpump. Took the bike to our new Hervey Bay/Maryborough dealer who checked the bike over.

Battery was under charged but my charger at home wouldn't put enough grunt into it to turn it over. Apparently, you need 13.7v to charge these batteries properly to full capacity so if you don't have one with this output, take it to an auto electrician who does. Much cheaper that buying one, $200aus plus.

Oil leak was another thing..Apparently the shaft was worn ( yes, on a 10hr old bike 8O ) & Husaberg Aus said it was a known issue so they agreed to replace it but only if I paid half the labour & gasket set. Problems started because I bought the bike from a dealer on the other side of the country & the paperwork hadn't been done. To add to this, I hadn't taken the bike to a dealer for it's 3 hr service. Nearest dealers to me were 14 hrs north & 7 hrs south before the new dealer in Hervey Bay opened early this year. After the dealer I took it to explained I had done the oil changes to Husaberg Aus they covered the work fully.

I think any new Husaberg owners really need to check out their warranty conditions carefully as I could have got caught if Husaberg Aus weren't so forgiving on this occasion. Biggest concern for them was I had run the run-in oil for the full 10 hrs.

Got my baby back now & all good. If the starter spins any faster its gunna explode & starts in half a second from cold. Thanks to all the boys at Hervey Bay Husaberg for looking after me so well.

Nice to hear a good news story Wal, how is the FS going? hit the track withit yet?

Hey incidently, what battery did they put back in? was it the standard Yuasa YTX5L (4 amp hour) or whatever it is, or the YTZ7S 6 Amp hour battery, I have been thinking of going to the 6AH batt.

You should be able to get a good 3-step charger in Oz for less than that. I know Mascot make one sold through Powerbox for a bit over $100. I think that a charger is almost a prerequisite for these bikes.

Are we talking about one of those 'Optimate' chargers, they are a smart charger type affair, and plenty of people swear by them?

Optimate is one brand, but there are lots of them. Just be sure to look for something like 3-step, 3-stage, 4-step, 4 stage etc. Different people try to claim extra steps, but they typically do the same thing:

1. When you first connect them they charge the battery at constant current. As the battery charges the voltage across its terminals rises.

2. When when the terminal voltage 14.2V or thereabouts it switches over to constant high voltage mode and holds this voltage for a preset time - usually a couple of hours. During this time, because the voltage is constant the charge current reduces as the battery charges further.

3. At the end of the time it switches over to constant standby voltage mode - usually 13.7 to 13.8 V. 12V lead acid batteries can be held at this virtually idefinitely without damage.

If you put the battery under load and pull the voltage below 13.8V, it goes back to the start of the cycle again.

For the small batteries in 'bergs you want one that only charges a couple of amps maximum during constant current mode or the battery will get hot during this step.

I just had a look on fleabay & there are quite a few different ones there for less than $80. I'd still recommend the Mascot one though, only cause mine seems to work great. It looks like a laptop power supply.

Hey guys, i use an optimate charger that i got in a sale from hein gericke a year or two ago, think it cost me 20GBP. It has 4 lights on it indicating the state the battery is in and also tells you if you connect the wrong way. Ive permanently fixed a lead under my seat which i plug into after every ride. My Berg LIVES on the charger and so far has never failed to start. I have a charger for every bike i own and i never have any problems with any of them,i even started my gsxr that hasnt been run for a few months and it started first press of the button. I'd recommend buying a charger to everyone. Brilliant way to spend some money and if you save the life of one battery then it has paid for itself !!
