Warranty advice

I don't know about any kind of extended warranty, but I do know I would never offer to guarantee a used dirt dike that was out of the factory warranty. The only exception would be if one of my good friends was buying it, but then he would be aware of any problems the bike may have.

If you were to guarantee this bike against any mechanical failures that are not his fault and something does happen, how is it proven that it was not rider error? And who is to determine, unbiased, what the reason for the failure was?

I would explain that I couldn't guarantee a used bike but would be willing to come off the selling price a couple hundred to try to compensate. I think we all realize you are past ready to get rid of this bike, so if it was mine, I would just cut my losses and get out from under it.

I still think you should try to list it on ebay. Several have sold in the past few days and they are getting good money for them. And the '03 that's being parted out is up to around $1800 with 4 days left on most parts.

Good luck with your potential sale, I hope it goes well for you.

Tim,
There is no warranty on any used dirt bikes that I know of. I don't thing anybody would warranty one so why should you. What is the warranty on that used KTM you want. I imagine it is zero...zip... nada... (and that is for the best bike ever concieved  ). If it is possible try to stress the positive points of the Berg to your customer. You know the stuff like the lightest, fastest best handling 4 stroke made. A chance to be unique and stand apart from the masses of red, blue, yellow and orange. You know, all the stuff you bought into when you decided to join the Husaberg Force. Does the guy want a kickass dirtbike or a moped. Once again, anybody that thinks Bergs are bad need to read ALL the forums on thumpertalk.

Once again my unsoliceted 2 cents worth

Hi,

I can imagine, it´s a hot subject when selling a bike.
When I sold my last bike (FC 501 2000) I said the guy who bought
it if he gets technical problems which are not his fault he can
contact me again and I´ll try to help him. I was glad that he
was interested in my bike and I absolutely needed the money he was
willing to pay. So I can imagine your situation.
I never heard again of my bike, it was in quite good mechanical condition.
The only thing I heard about was that the stator failed after 3 months. But that was not my fault. I couldn´t foresee that.
I totally agree with newby and berger. Even KTM gives a warranty for 1 month when bike is new. Everything that gets damaged after this time period maybe get replaced by a obliging dealer. But warranty? I doubt it.
A friend of mine bought a used 3-month-old KTM SX 520. After the first ride the clutch hub was broken. This part was paid by the guy who sold this bike.
That´s all what can be expected I would say. Everything else what gets damaged or broken has to be paid by the owner himself.
Maybe you can give him a personal "warranty" for 2 or 3 month for parts that fail not of his fault, but that could be a long time period.
I think you don´t trust your bike anymore, so it must be a hard decision for you to give a warranty. But what should fail next? You know your bike, I don´t.
Maybe I would offer him to support him for the next month and maybe fix something broken that´s not his fault. But the day will come when generosity is over.

I think I would be very careful about that.I got myself burned that way.I sold a bike to a person I used to work with.I had not had any problems with the bike and I offered to help if he had any problems.Right off the bat he didn`t know how to ride the thing and started having troubles. He also started listening and letting other people tinker with it.I advised him a few times concerning things he needed to do{witch he didn`t}and as a result he s*** me out of the full payment.Be sure to say what you will do and what you won`t.Make that plain{if you have to draw him a picture}but make sure he understands.Like what I said be careful.

Give him the deal of the century. "How bad do you want to sell it? 30'or 30 seconds or what ever come first! The bike is sold as is! This is a high performance race bike with a electric restart starter! Explain the drill to the buyer and tell him he must use it when the bike is cold or he'll damage the engine. Then send it & them down the road.

Here's my two cents,

This is the readers digest version. I bought a 94 FE501 used from a guy who swore it didn't have that many hours on it blah blah blah. It was the first berg I bought. Long story short the guy sold me a clapped piece of s#@t. I spent $ 2000.00 on rebuilding the engine and carb. After that the bike ran like a scallded cat!!!! And was running great when I sold it to my good friend. He rode it for a season of racing and then had fourth gear go out at the beginning of the next season. This was when there was no HNA. The local dealer told him he couldn't get the parts he need b/c there wasn't a HNA. But b/c of the support from this site, I handed him the part two days after the local dealer told him they couldn't be found.l He fixed the bike up and traded it off for a quad for his wife a few months later.

Point being, like one of the previous posts said, he is my friend so I told him everything about the bike and he accepted the fact that the bike was used but well maintained. Buying a used dirt bike is a crap shoot, maybe the guy selling the bike is telling the TRUTH and maybe he isn't. I know that if I ever bought another used dirt bike, the first thing I would do would be to take it completely apart and go through everything, it's the only way to be sure that the bike will be reliable.

I know that there are companies out there who sell warranties. Just like extended warranties for cars, they can be had for dirt bikes. I don't know what the laws are like in Auz, but that could have something to do with why they have longer warranties than here in the states.

THE MAIN POINT HERE IS THAT IN MY EXPERIENCE WITH HUSABERG, ANY PART THAT HAS/HAD A KNOWN DEFECT WILL BE REPLACED BY HUSABERG. THEY HAVE REPLACED TWO SETS OF CASES ON MY 2001, AND THE IGNITION MODULE. I WONDER IF HONDA IS REPLACING THE HEADS, VALVES ETC... ON THE CR250X'S THAT KEEP WEARING OUT IN A VERY SHORT TIME???.
