Valves on 570

So, I'm about to go about checking the valves on my FS570, I have the reapir manual but it does assume that the engine is out the bike and stripped down to check them.

My question is, to make my life simpler what do I HAVE to take off and what don't I?

My guesses are

tank
radiators
rocker cover
sparky
for checking do I need to release and remove the cam chain tensioner? in absence of the special tool that you push in the CCT, what are people using? I know I need to remove it to get the cam out when I need to swap the shims.

also, is the repair manual the same as a workshop manual?

cheers

Pedro,

Remove the following to make your life simple for this task:

Tank
Radiators

No need to remove the cam chain tensioner, Period. If you have to change the valve shims pull the rocker arm shafts, it's much simpler than removing the cam. My guess is you won't have to change the shims, but, maybe.

If you have the shop manual it will show you how to line up the cam with a dot on the cam bearing tower.

You will need to pull the spark plug, put the bike in 6th gear and roll the motor around that way to get it lined up on TDC on the compression stroke and then check the valves. You will probably just end up checking the clearances and put then put it back together.

Yes the repair manual is the shop manual

Thanks Dale,

I'm guessing the only access is via the rocker cover off? no viewing ports that can be used sneekily?

Correct, and of course the valve cover itself. 4 bolts and it's off. It has a reusable gasket.

Read through the manual first, make sure you have the right feeler gauges, and then get to it. If you don't have a fan kit on your bike you should be able to check the valves in about 30 minutes. If it needs to be re shimmed well that will take substantially longer.

I'm guessing it won't as its only done 12hrs of commuting on the road and not thrashed. Yet.. hehe. Don't have feelers yet.

what do you recommend for a feeler set?

all done. sweet.

All within spec however the L intake was only 0.01 within spec. all others are right in the middle.

Just had my valves checked on my 09 FE450. 2,780 miles, 140 hours and still within spec. How often are you guys checking your valves?
