valves, normally get looser? or tighter?

just checked the valves on my 4 month old fe550. i have 2 other bikes (plus a mtn bike or 2), so i haven't been riding it too much, but i'm up to 70 hours and change. the intakes appear to have not moved at all since 28 hrs, and the exhausts seem to have loosened up maybe 1/8 turn or a little less. i was just wondering if that's about normal.

i know with my other 4-strokes (kawis, shim under bucket) the valves tend to tighten up as they pound into the head over time.

Hi Mark,

My 04 550 has experienced the same type of valve lash changes in the past. The main thing I notice over the older bikes is that the lash changes very little if any between checks.

I adjusted the intakes on mine once, they were tight after break in. Exhausts have not moved. I have a little less hours then Velo's. I think it depends on the bike mfg on how the valves do. KTM's intakes are notoriously soft, so they constantly tighten up as they pound into the seat. I know from experience since I have one, and had to replace both intakes around 150 hrs. If a valve loosens, it has to be on the top somewhere--stem wear, rocker, or cam wear come to mind.

So far the Husaberg valve train is requiring less adjustment than my KTM. This leads me to believe they make their intakes out of a better grade of stainless steel than KTM. I was wondering about that since the two heads are so close in design and operation.

If they are loosening be sure to check the rocker arm rollers.

MotoXotica's mechanic who rides a 2003 berg and service Dan's berg too, says husberg valve tappet clearances tend to loosen over time not tighten. He also likes to tighten them down to like 0.002- 0.003" clearance which I don't feel comfortable at, but he runs his like that.

I just set mine tonight. All the way up to 5.3 hrs 8O .Spec is .12mm and the intakes were .10 and exhausts .09.I also tried the 1/8 turn method but this consistently gave me a clearance of between .09 and .10.If the Motoxotica mechanic runs his tight maybe this isn't an issue but generally I'd sooner err on the side of looseness.

Hi,

I just bought a '06 FE450E; but the manual does not shows the procedure to check/adjust the valves.

Where can I find more info about it?

In the 05 Repair Manual, probably section E7, Assembling the Engine, Adjusting the Valve Clearance. The 06 is not out yet.

You can download it from www.husaberg.se
