tomorrow I'm gonna try to adjust the valves on my 99 fc501. I've never done this before. I heard you can tighten your tappets down to the vaves stem then back it off about 1/8th of a turn.. I started to try tonight, but I couldn't tell when I hit or was pushing the valve down. is there a trick to this, or should I buy a feeler gauge? another thing, how do you know when you are at tdc on the compression stroke? I pulled my sparkplug and turned the engine over as I watched the intake tappets go down then back up, I think I did it right... any comments... thanks tred23
I tried the 1/8th turn and put the bike back together. the compression seamed to have changed, it was alot harder to kick over. when I got it started, the valves ticked alot, but ran good. what will happen if you run with to large of a gap? I actually re-adjusted the valve tonight with a feeler guage, the ticking is gone...
I also did the valves on my 98 fe600, the intake valves have no more adjustment, I guess that means I need new intake valves??? Il appreciate your comments and help....

you should be on 1/6th of a turn unless you know better. always take the ignition cover off and watch the flywheel marks come round to the 12 o clock position just after the inlets closed. go clockwise. on the early stuff where the stator is hidden by an external flywheel it isn't so easy. poke a round ended rod through the plug hole and feel for the piston coming to the highest point. you should read about this in the doc first and not just go at it. for instance, you want the spring on the manual decomp disconnected while you do this.
