In the workshop manual, it tells you to use a valve spring compressor to allow the valves to be removed and re-fitted.
Can the job be done without this tool?
Any home-made or improvisation ideas?
Cheers

Getting them off is easy i use a socket about 1/2 inch on top of the valve springs and give it a quick semi firm tap with a hammer this dislodges the collets and the valves fall out be sure not to lose them though bit harder putting them back in though i use a small wheel puller using one of the hooks some where on the head and resting the fork where the thread goes through then use leverage ,fiddly but works i am sure other people have a better way though

This is the one I used, shouldn't be too hard to replicate it using some scrap metal if you know how to weld.

I'm too lazy and like buying shiny new tools :D

When I come to need one I was thinking of adapting a G clamp from the local hardware store.

I was thinking along the lines of a modified 'g' clamp too.
A friend has got a pukka valve spring compressor, so I'm going to use that.
Cheers
