Valve overlap?

Just trying to understand the Berg motor better. I noticed some discussion about valves in the roadracer thread. I have no concern about high rev operation, but that did make me wonder about cam profiles. What does Dale's cam grind actually do? Less overlap? Softer opening/closing? Shift the valve timing?

How would this relate to starting the bike? In cold weather (about 0C) the starter will slip and not crank the engine. Feathering the decomp lever will usually help it spin enough to start. I should put in lighter oil, but for the last one or two rides of the year, I would normally just use the kickstarter to get it going.

Trouble is, it does not respond well to the kickstarter. Throttle closed / choke on / find compression / just past / full stroke kick. This results in a backfire out the muffler on each kick, then it just starts after a few kicks. After doing the compression test, I see that the kickstarter can't duplicate what the estart does (I just couldn't spin it fast enough to get the same result). Would a cam regrind improve the starting characteristics?

Note: I am not using the A/P function, so I am totally dependant on the choke circuit for starting. Obviously a bit more carb sorting would help the cold weather starting. At this point I am just curious about the cam grind.

The Husaberg lobes are introducing high forces to the valve train. This comes from the "concave" shaped flanks on the lobe profiles, giving very tough acceleration. This is common in race cam designs, but you´ll pay dearly with reduced valve train life length, for the limited performance benefit. Dale´s profiles are less stressing to the valve train, with very little loss of performance compared to a Husaberg cam with corresponding timing. The timing in theese type of cams is not so much racing after all, so it seemes overkill to me, to spice it with concave flanks...
